How This List Was Created

Top Allergy Organizations Issue Joint Statement on President Trump

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Executive Committee created a task force to lead work on Choosing Wisely consisting of board members, the AAAAI President and Secretary/Treasurer and AAAAI participants in the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters. Through multiple society publications and notifications, AAAAI members were invited to offer feedback and recommend elements to be included in the list. A targeted email was also sent to an extended group of AAAAI leadership inviting them to participate.

The work group reviewed the submissions to ensure the best science in the specialty was included. Based on this additional members were recruited for their expertise. Suggested elements were considered for appropriateness, relevance to the core of the specialty, potential overuse of resources and opportunities to improve patient care. They were further refined to maximize impact and eliminate overlap, and then ranked in order of potential importance both for the specialty and for the public. Finally, the work group chose its top five recommendations which were then approved by the Executive Committee.

Hartman Family Foundation Challenge Grant Matched

We met our match! We are thrilled to announce that we have raised $1.2 million to meet our challenge grant from the Hartman Family Foundation. Through the generous 1-to-1 match from Kim and Alan Hartman’s Foundation and so many other generous donors, we raised a total of $2.4 million to directly support this major step to making a food allergy vaccine a reality.

Stay tuned for updates about this groundbreaking study to test an approach called peptide vaccine immunotherapy. Similar to a tuberculosis test, the food allergy vaccine would go under the skin to stimulate a specific set of immune cells and permanently reduce or suppress allergic reactions.

This could be a breakthrough for our field and we are grateful to the Hartman Foundation for making it possible through their gift, said Dr. Kari Nadeau, Director of the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy & Asthma Research at Stanford University.

94% of Center funding is provided by philanthropy. Ongoing support helps patients and families everyday by advancing the science and research for groundbreaking clinical trials, educating and disseminating protocol across the nation, building infrastructure for the Center, and so much more. Finding Answers And Shaping Policies

The Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research , part of the Institute for Public Health and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago, aims to find answers and shape policies surrounding food allergy, asthma and other allergic conditions.

Led by Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, CFAAR is comprised of three interdisciplinary and collaborative research cores: 1.) Public Health Data Repository Core, 2.) Clinical Research Core and 3.) Community/School Outreach Core. These cores are led by experts in the fields of epidemiology, health services research, health behavior, patient care, and advocacy seeking to make meaningful improvements in the health of children, adults, and families living with allergic disease.

The CFAAR team is internationally recognized for research in these areas. They have published the prevalence of pediatric and adult food allergy in the United States, characterized the economic impact of food allergy, and identified disparities in access to care and outcomes among food allergy and asthma patients. To reduce the burden of these diseases and improve health equity, they develop, evaluate, and disseminate interventions and conduct work to inform local, national, and international health policy.

Iv Administration Improves Tumor

Understanding Food Allergy

Colorized scanning electron micrograph of a T lymphocyte.

An experimental therapeutic cancer vaccine induced two distinct and desirable immune system responses that led to significant tumor regression in mice, report investigators from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases , part of the National Institutes of Health.

The researchers found that intravenous administration of the vaccine boosted the number of cytotoxic T cells capable of infiltrating and attacking tumor cells and engaged the innate immune system by inducing type I interferon. The innate immune response modified the tumor microenvironment, counteracting suppressive forces that otherwise would tamp down T-cell action. Modification of the tumor microenvironment was not seen in mice that received the vaccine via needle injection into the skin .

Dubbed vax-innate by the scientific team, the approach achieves an important goal in the quest for more effective immunotherapeutic vaccines for cancer. The study demonstrates that IV vaccine delivery enables and enhances T-cell immunity by overcoming tumor-induced immunosuppressive activity. The researchers say the candidate vaccine might also be given intravenously to people who have already received tumor-specific T cells as a therapy. It also could improve tumor control by increasing the number of T cells and altering the tumor microenvironment to make them function better, the researchers note.
