There is a commonly held view that people with asthma should avoid milk and other dairy products, because they are said to promote the production of mucus, and hence trigger asthma attacks. This perception dates back more than 2000 years, when some alternative medicine systems attributed excess mucus production to the consumption of milk.

According to the National Asthma Council and the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy , it is rare for dairy foods to trigger an asthma attack.

The placebo effect is what happens when you believe a pill, potion, tincture, or snake oil will work. If someone believes that what they are taking will help them recover from illness, there is a greater chance of them getting better.

What the experiment above, with the milk and the common cold, did find was that a very small, statistically insignificant percentage of those people who believed in the theory coughed a bit more after they drank some milk.

Processed Foods And Certain High

More than 19 million American adults have asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Inflammation and narrowing in the lungs is the primary cause of symptoms associated with the disease.

And while theres no evidence that any one diet will cure asthma, a growing body of research suggests that certain foods can worsen inflammation, and therefore the severity of asthma, according to Meredith C.
