While diet can’t cure asthma, there are ways to eat to help ease symptoms. The key: focus on anti-inflammatory foods. Inflammation is what causes the airways to swell and become irritated, and researchers are trying to understand how certain nutrients can reduce that. Keep in mind that an overall healthy diet is likely to be more helpful than any specific foods. “Studies show people eating a Mediterranean diet have fewer asthma symptoms,” says Lauri Wright, PhD, RD, assistant professor of nutrition at the University of South Florida. The produce section of your supermarketor local farmer’s marketis a great place to find foods rich in antioxidants, which are anti-inflammatory and may help control the swelling that makes it hard to breathe. “Think colors!” Dr. Wright says. She recommends eating five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables a day and choosing a variety of colors.


Both dried and fresh chili peppers, such as jalapenos, are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that fights inflammation. If your taste sways mild, reach for red and yellow sweet peppers. Other foods with vitamin C include mustard greens, kale, broccoli and kiwi.

Asthma is a respiratory disease that can cause inflammation from the airways to the lungs and the condition can make breathing difficult to an extent that patients cannot perform their daily activities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , about 25 million Americans suffer from asthma. It is one of the chronic conditions among American children: 1 out of 12 children suffers from asthma.

Research proves that a traditional Western diet high in refined grains, red meat, processed meat, and sweets can worsen asthma symptoms by increasing inflammation. Therefore, a diet filled with more fruits and vegetables must be included to positively impact both asthma risk and control.

Here is a list of food items that you can include in your diet if you want to prevent the worsening of asthma symptoms.

You May Not Want To Eat Almonds Every Day If Youre Worried About Kidney Stones

Although almonds contain a number of health-promoting micronutrients, they also contain the anti-nutrient oxalate. According to Healthline, oxalate is an organic compound found in many plant foods. Oxalate binds to minerals usually calcium to create crystals, and these crystals leave the body through both stool and urine. In some individuals, however, these crystals collect in the kidneys and become kidney stones.

While several substances can concentrate in the kidneys and become stones, the National Kidney Foundation notes that calcium oxalate accounts for 80 percent of all kidney stones. These stones can be extremely painful to pass and may require surgical removal. Theyre also much more common than you might think: Roughly 7 percent of women and 13 percent of men will get kidney stones at least once in their lives, and having one kidney stone puts you at a higher risk for additional stones in the future.

For people trying to avoid kidney stones, the bad news is that almonds are very high in oxalate, so you may want to add them to your list of the worst foods for your kidneys. The University of Chicago noted that individuals eating a low-oxalate diet must limit themselves to no more than 11 almonds a day.

Preventing Asthma Symptoms From Worsening

When it comes to controlling asthma symptoms, prevention can go a long way. Since asthma may be life-threatening, its critical to identify your triggers and avoid them.

Tobacco smoke is an asthma trigger for many people. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about quitting. If someone in your household smokes, talk to them about quitting. In the meantime, make sure they smoke outdoors.

You can take more steps that may help prevent asthma attacks if you:

  • Get a pneumonia and flu shot each year to avoid illnesses that could trigger asthma attacks.
  • Take your asthma medications as prescribed.
  • Track your asthma and monitor your breathing to identify early warning signs that your asthma is worsening.
  • Use an air conditioner to reduce your exposure to dust mites and outdoor pollutants and allergens such as pollen.
  • Use dust covers on your bed and pillows to reduce dust exposure.
  • Reduce pet dander by regularly grooming and bathing your pets.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when spending time outside in the cold
  • Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to keep humidity in your home at optimal levels.
  • Clean your house regularly to eliminate mold spores and other indoor allergens.

Why We Need Calcium

Calcium is vitally important in the body for cell functioning. Its stored in the bones and teeth where it supports their structure and function. Dairy products are the main source of calcium in our diet.

There are particular times in life such as during growth spurts in children and adolescents when new bone formation occurs and adequate dietary calcium is essential to facilitate this process. Maximum bone density is achieved during puberty and the higher it is at this time, the better ones lifetime bone health will be. This is why adequate dietary calcium intake is especially important in childhood.

Further, many asthmatics are prescribed preventer medication which contains an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid medicine. At high doses, this is associated with the development of osteopenia and osteoporosis. So its important that asthmatics of all ages have an adequate calcium intake to meet their dietary needs:

  • 210mg daily from birth to six months,
  • 500mg in early childhood,
  • 1300mg from ages 12 to 18 years,
  • 1000 to 1200mg in adults.

These targets are difficult to achieve unless dairy products are part of the diet. If youre not getting enough calcium, talk to your doctor or health professional about calcium supplements such as calcium carbonate or calcium citrate.

Should I Avoid Milk And Other Dairy Products

No. The milk myth the idea that milk makes mucous or that dairy products trigger asthma has been busted by scientists for some time. In fact, cows milk and other dairy foods very rarely trigger asthma symptoms in people without milk allergy. There have even been studies, both in Australia and overseas, that suggest if you have a regular intake of dairy products in childhood, you are less likely to develop asthma.

Concern about mucous is one of the most common reasons why people with asthma avoid dairy products, but its a misconception. The milk=mucous idea comes from the mouth-feel associated with milk some people confuse the coating that milk can leave on the back of the throat with mucus, but there is no evidence that milk increases mucous or narrows the airways.

Unfortunately, most Australians are missing out on the health benefits that come from consuming milk, cheese and yogurt as they dont include enough dairy foods in their diet. It is estimated that eight out of 10 Australian adults and most Australian children need to increase their intake of the dairy food group in order to meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

So unless diagnosed with a specific allergy or intolerance to dairy foods by your doctor, there is no reason to restrict or remove dairy foods from your diet. The best way to achieve good asthma control is to follow a written asthma action plan developed with your doctor.
