Generic Version Of Popular Asthma Inhaler Wins Fda Approval

Asthma how-to: How to use an inhaler with a spacer and mouthpiece

The first generic version of the widely used Advair Diskus inhaler for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has won U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.

This approval “is part of our longstanding commitment to advance access to lower cost, high-quality generic alternatives,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

“People living with asthma and COPD know too well the critical importance of having access to the treatment they need to feel better. Today’s approval will bring more competition to the market, which will ultimately benefit the patients who rely on this drug,” Woodcock said Wednesday in an agency news release.

The new inhaler, from drug maker Mylan, contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder. It’s approved for twice-daily treatment of asthma in patients aged 4 years and older. In COPD cases, it’s approved for maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction and reducing exacerbations.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. More than 26 million people in the United States are known to have it, including about 7 million children, the FDA noted.

COPD is a progressive lung disease that affects breathing and often worsens over time. Symptoms can include coughing that produces large amounts of mucus, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

Such metered dose inhalers, known as complex generics, are harder to copy because of their complex formulation or mode of delivery, said FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen M. Hahn in a statement. In other words: Its not just the medication but the device itself thats harder to duplicate for a generic version.

As a result, too many complex drugs lack generic competition, Hahn noted. Getting more generic copies of complex drugs to the market is a key priority.

Agency Supports Development Of Complex Generic Drug

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic of Symbicort Inhalation Aerosol for the treatment of two common pulmonary health conditions: asthma in patients six years of age and older and the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction and reducing exacerbations for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. This complex generic drug-device combination product, which is a metered-dose inhaler, should not be used to treat acute asthma attacks.

Todays approval of the first generic for one of the most commonly prescribed complex drug-device combination products to treat asthma and COPD is another step forward in our commitment to bring generic copies of complex drugs to the market, which can improve quality of life and help reduce the cost of treatment, said Sally Choe, Ph.D., director of the Office of Generic Drugs in the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. This reflects the FDAs continued efforts to increase competition and access to quality, safe, effective and affordable medicines for patients and consumers.

This drug-device combination product is a metered-dose inhaler , which contains both budesonide and formoterol . Two inhalations, two times a day , treat both diseases by preventing symptoms, such as wheezing for those with asthma, and by helping with better breathing, for those with COPD. The inhaler is approved for two strengths .

Fda Approves First Generic Asthma Inhaler

About 26 million people in the U.S. have asthma, a disease that affects the lungs, with almost a quarter of them children, the FDA noted. Theres no cure, but the condition can be managed with proper prevention of asthma attacks and treatment. Still, more than 3,500 people die of asthma each year, according to American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

This is a big deal because this is the first standalone generic asthma inhaler that the FDA has approved and by that I mean its a true generic its one thats not made by a brand-name company, said NBC News medical correspondent Dr. John Torres.

When the brand name companies make it, the price doesnt necessarily come down. Hopefully, this will drive pricing down.

How Can I Reuse Or Recycle Asthma Inhalers

By louisa on 8 Aug 2007 | 31

Weve had another email from Am , this time saying:

My partner is asthmatic and so goes through inhalers. It seems a waste to throw them out, I dont think there is much to be done with reusing them though I may be wrong.

Does anyone know of anywhere these could be returned for reuse? Even if it is only the plastic outer casing?

My first thought would be to ask the chemist to not include the plastic part with each refill but if they get the complete inhaler from the pharmaceutical company already packaged up, they probably would end up just throwing them out from the shop. Does anyone know what the situation is with this?

And what about suggestions for reuse? Or recycling the individual bits?

Hello

I thought i would share this with you as i was really impressed with it.

We were in Wales at the weekend and had to go to a pharmacy to collect a prescription and saw behind the counter a box for recycling asthma inhalers.

As i dont live in Wales i asked if i could post them my inhalers so that they could be recycled and they are happy for me to do that for me

Its just a shame that my local pharmacy dont do it.

Thats a good idea! Wish mine did it. I take my used ones back because Im not sure what else to do with them and saw somewhere that youre supposed to, but I dont think they recycle them.

Imagine from the look of them that the various Clenil inhalers would be GSK though.

Clenil, Fostair and Atimos are manufactured by Chiesi Limited.

Is It Possible To Get A Free Albuterol Inhaler

It depends. Some brand-name albuterol inhalers may be free through the drugs manufacturer.

For example, you may be able to get a free Proventil HFA inhaler through the drugs manufacturer. The manufacturer of Proair HFA also offers a similar service. Proventil HFA and Proair HFA are brand-name forms of albuterol.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to find out if the form of albuterol youre prescribed may be available for free. For more information about the differences between generic and brand-name drugs, including albuterol, see the Generic vs. brand-name drugs section below.

Proper Management & Inhaler Use

The key message from the Asthma Society of Ireland is to gain control of your asthma, rather than letting asthma control you. With the help of an asthma management plan, which can be obtained from the ASI and completed in discussion with your doctor or nurse, you can bring your asthma under control. Then you can work on gradually reducing the medication to the point where you can find the minimum amount of medication required to maintain control of your asthma.

We strongly advise people to use peak flow meters and develop their own asthma management plans so that they can get the early warning signs of their asthma deteriorating and they can increase their medication, says Dr Shanahan.

The trick is to try to find out what is the minimum level of medication that keeps them under control, so people can control their asthma as cost-efficiently as possible and avoid the exacerbations that end up in the emergency department, which is distressing, risky and expensive.

The Standard Mdi Inhaler

Using an Inhaler with a Spacer Mask

A standard MDI is shown above. The MDI has been used for over 40 years and is used to deliver various types and brands of medicines. It contains a pressurised inactive gas that propels a dose of medicine in each ‘puff’. Each dose is released by pressing the top of the inhaler. This type of inhaler is quick to use, small, and convenient to carry. It needs good co-ordination to press the canister and breathe in fully at the same time. Sometimes these are known as evohalers .

The standard MDI is the most widely used inhaler. However, many people do not use it to its best effect. Common errors include:

  • Not shaking the inhaler before using it.
  • Inhaling too sharply or at the wrong time.
  • Not holding your breath long enough after breathing in the contents.

Until recently, the propellant gas in MDI inhalers has been a chlorofluorocarbon . However, CFCs damage the Earth’s ozone layer and so are being phased out. The newer CFC-free inhalers work just as well, but they use a different propellant gas that does not damage the ozone layer.

What Are The Different Types Of Inhalers

âRescue inhalerâ refers to short-acting bronchodilators. These bronchodilators open the airways and help stop or relieve acute symptoms very quickly and work for around 4 hours. While rescue inhalers are used most often for treating sudden attacks of wheezing or shortness of breath, they can also be used before exercise to mitigate any breathing issues during your workout. Some examples of short-acting bronchodilators, or rescue inhalers are:

Long-acting bronchodilators control the symptoms of lung conditions with the intent of stopping attacks before they start. Theyâre called long acting because the effect lasts at least twelve hours. Some examples of long-acting bronchodilators are:

  • Advair, Dulera, and Symbicort

While most people are familiar with pressurized inhalers, there are three ways medication is delivered via inhaler:

  • Metered-dose inhaler which uses pressure to push the medication out of the inhaler.

  • Nebulizers use air or oxygen and deliver a mist of the medication through a tube or mask that fits over your nose and mouth.

  • Dry powder inhalers deliver medication through strong and fast inhalation of the medication.

Who needs to use an inhaler?

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Can You Recycle Inhalers

5/5inhalersbebeThey can berecycle Inhalers

In respect to this, how do you dispose of inhalers?

Believe it or not, inhalers cannot be disposed of in your medical waste disposal box, pharmaceutical disposal box or sharps container. Most inhalers are considered hazardous waste, and the easiest way to safely dispose of them is giving them to your local pharmacy.

Additionally, can you use old inhalers? If youre in an urgent situation and need asthma medication in order to breathe, only use an expired inhaler as a supplement until youre able to find an unexpired inhaler or youre able to seek medical treatment. Most inhalers are also safe to use up to one year after the expiration date.

Similarly one may ask, can asthma inhalers be recycled UK?

Complete the Cycle from GlaxoSmithKline is the first UK-wide recycling and recovery scheme for all respiratory inhalers. You can safely and responsibly recycle your empty inhalers or inhalers you no longer require through any participating pharmacy.

How do you dispose of Albuterol?

  • Place the mix in a container, like a sealed plastic bag.
  • Throw the container in your trash.
  • Cool the cooking oil before you handle it.
  • Choose a non-breakable container with a resealable lid.
  • Toss the container of used oil in the trash.
  • Freeze and scoop the oil into the trash.

What Are The Side Effects Of Theophylline

    Side effects of theophylline include:

    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Jittery or nervous feeling

These side effects may also be a sign that youâve taken too much medication. Your doctor will check levels of the drug in your blood to make sure youâre getting the proper amount.

Always tell your doctors if you take theophylline for asthma because certain medications, like some antibiotics, seizure medicines, and ulcer medicines, can interact with it. Make sure your doctor knows about any other medical conditions you may have. Some diseases and illnesses can change how your body responds to theophylline.

And keep in mind that not only is smoking and exposure to cigarette smoke especially dangerous when you have asthma, it can also interfere with how your body responds to the medication. So itâs best to avoid smoke and cigarette smoking.

    Other Asthma Costs To Consider

If you have moderate or severe asthma, youll need to see your doctor more regularly to check on your treatment plan. However, you should only need a yearly check-in if you have mild asthma, shares Dr. Gupta. In addition to the costs of your routine office visits and prescription medications, testing will also be done at least annually to see how your lungs are doingthis adds an additional cost to your asthma treatment plan.

According to one 2018 study by the CDC, the average annual medical cost of asthma was $3,266 per person. This total annual cost per person was then broken down into the following:

    • Prescription medications accounted for an average of $1,830 of the total annual cost per person.
    • Office visits accounted for approximately $640 of the total annual cost per person.
    • Hospitalization accounted for approximately $529 of the total annual cost per person.
    • Hospital-based outpatient visits accounted for approximately $176 of the total annual cost per person.
    • Emergency room visits accounted for approximately $105 of the total annual cost per person.

Even with proper medication adherence and additional cost-saving methods, the total cost of asthma can be a financial burden for many. Talk to your healthcare provider about alternative inhaler options and possible side effects. They will help determine if a less expensive inhaler may work for the treatment of your asthma symptoms.

    Preventer Inhaler Side Effects

Preventer inhalers have a number of common side effects. These include a sore throat, hoarse voice and a mouth infection known as thrush.

Inhalers used to treat asthma contain steroids and higher doses of steroids can cause some further side effects. Your doctor will try to keep you on the lowest dose of asthma treatment to reduce the amount of steroids you need to use. However, for moderate and severe cases of asthma, you may need a higher dose. Less common side effects of inhalers will not affect everyone but may affect some people with asthma.

These less common side effects include:

    • increased appetite
    • puffiness, especially around the face
    • high blood pressure
    • weakening of the bones

If you have any concerns about side effects caused by your asthma inhalers it is important to continue to take your medication whilst seeking medical advice, unless you think you are having an allergic reaction, in which case you should seek advice as an emergency. You should speak to your GP before stopping your medication, even if you are worried about side effects. Stopping medication without expert advice could make your symptoms get worse or you could suffer a life-threatening asthma attack. Your GP will be able to adjust your asthma medication plan in order to manage any side effects.

How To Save On Inhaler Costs

Inhalers are an important part of the treatment and management of asthma. However, many come at a high cost as a result of the lack of generic drugs on the market, which is commonly due to patents on the brand-name versions.

Once these patents expire, pharmaceutical companies are able to start getting approval from the Food and Drug Administration for new patents on generic versions. This will likely help drive down the cost of these inhalers and give people more affordable options.

In the meantime, there are numerous ways to save on your inhaler costs, some of which require you to meet certain eligibility requirements, while others dont.
