More than 15 million Americans, approximately 5% of adults and 8% of children, have a food allergy and nearly 40 percent of these children have already experienced a severe or life-threatening reaction. Studies have revealed living with food allergies, strict avoidance of the allergen and the fear of accidental exposure, increases anxiety and has a negative impact on a childs quality of life as well as the familys quality of life.

Who Should Visit Our Practice Healthy Women Who Want To Become Pregnant

Who should see an allergist? Healthy women who WANT to become pregnant.

About 8% of US children have a current food allergy while rates of food allergy have continued rising . Though we cant explain why, we can suggest steps future MOMs can try that might reduce risks for food allergy in their future offspring.

Some suggestions are easy . Some are harder . Some suggestions require avoiding things . Others suggest adding things . Many suggestions depend on family factors, like the presence of allergic illnesses in immediate family. In some such cases, increased consumption of certain allergenic foods is protective. But most people do not know that avoiding certain foods at critical times is also protective .

The information surrounding prevention of food allergy is VERY complex and constantly changing. It requires experts to tailor suggestions to an individual mothers specific circumstances. Some suggestions start BEFORE conception. I have been seeing moms of currently food allergic kids who want advice for planning their NEXT pregnancy. I now expect women without any children to see me about this advice BEFORE they get pregnant for the first time.

Who Should Visit Our Practice Persons Often Taking Antibiotics For Sinus Infections Who Have Totally Negative Allergy Testing

Our practice has developed several such treatment plans that consistently achieve excellent long-term results for our sinus patients – whether they have allergies or not. Our patients are taught how to apply safe, topical medicines into their deepest sinus spaces without using any swallowed pharmaceuticals. Our patients AVOID antibiotics, long oral steroid courses, and sinus surgery. Our plan relieves symptoms and normalizes sinus function while being safe enough to use long-term. Once the treatment is working, most of our sinus patients NEVER need antibiotics or oral steroids for their sinuses again. These techniques were developed by different specialists from around the world and our practice is unique in offering them all in one place. Most of our very happy sinus patients have NO allergies.

If you have recurrent sinus issues, before taking another course of harmful antibiotics or steroids, before agreeing to sinus surgery, and before giving up on finding a lasting solution, call us to give our special sinus treatments a try.

Frequently Asked Questions With Dr Lateef

“Persian Cough Persistent cough for years. Have seen Ent, allergist and pulmonary post nasal drip, mucous… plus help?”

“Should deviated septum be repaired when ENT is doing sinus surgery? Saw ENT, CT confirmed unresponsive to antibiotics recurrent chronic sinusitis. Surgery to open cavities up etc was recommended. He was noncommittal on deviated septum repair, despite, 6 week previously his nurse practitioner was firm in stating they would, if nothing else, repair that . I’m a bit confused. All I read suggests the septum should be repaired especially with them doing sinus surgery. Thoughts or suggestions please.”

“Why was I prescribed prednisone my Dr. diagnosed me as having a sinus infection she prescribed augmentin and prednisone. I also told her I had a cough she prescribed a cough syrup with codeine. Why did she prescribe s steroid for a sinus infection?”

“Coughing Chronic coughing”

“Can an allergy go away? I used to be allergic to Milk but just got tested and the test says I am not anymore. I had trouble with the inside of my ears swelling, which would cause pain. A Naturalpath was the only one able to figure out this problem when I was young.”

“Acne post taking MethylPREDNISolone I took a 6 day dose pack of MethylPREDNISolone after an allergic reaction to an antibiotic I was on. Now I’m broken out in acne all over my face, neck and back. Are these related? And how long will it last?”

Who Should See An Allergist Healthy Pregnant Women With A Penicillin Allergy

About 10% of women will require antibiotics during their pregnancy . The antibiotic of choice for MOST pregnancy infections is penicillin . Studies show pregnant women not able to use penicillin suffer greater rates of complications .

Experts are now recommending ALL penicillin allergic women planning a pregnancy to have this allergy evaluated by an expert experienced in performing penicillin allergy evaluation . Very reliable penicillin skin testing can be performed in under 30 minutes. This is followed by a monitored challenge to penicillin . The shocking truth is that for over 95% of women in this situation, evaluation finds that there is NO DANGEROUS ALLERGY to penicillin . Once evaluation is negative, a letter is given to the patient which allows the use of penicillin in the future.

Such testing can be easily done ahead of problems, but is much more difficult during a hospitalization or acute illness/infection. This is the reason experts STRONGLY recommend having penicillin testing AHEAD of acute situations. For healthy penicillin allergic women, such testing should be IDEALLY completed BEFORE even becoming pregnant. Testing can be safely done during pregnancy as well . This is definitely a case of an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure.
