AME Assisted Special Issuance is a process that provides Examiners the ability to re-issue an airman medical certificate under the provisions of an Authorization for Special Issuance of a Medical Certificate to an applicant who has a medical condition that is disqualifying under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations part 67.

An FAA physician provides the initial certification decision and grants the Authorization in accordance with 14 CFR 67.401. The Authorization letter is accompanied by attachments that specify the information that treating physician must provide for the re-issuance determination.

If this is a first-time application for an AASI for the above disease/condition, and the applicant has all the requisite medical information necessary for a determination, the Examiner must defer and submit all of the documentation to the AMCD or for the initial determination.

Asthma Respiratory Symptoms And Allergy

There were five yes/no questions about asthma symptoms with a recall time of 12 months, including wheezing in chest at any time, attack of breathlessness at rest, attacks of breathlessness after exercise, woken up by attacks of breathlessness, and asthma attacks last 12 month. Any 4-yr degree from an accredited institution will meet the requirements. A STEM degree is only required if you wish to go the test pilot route or NASA later in your career.

As long as its from an accredited college, any degree will do. Business, Poli Sci, or Psychology are all very common degrees that are absolutely acceptable in order to be a pilot.

Whats more important than what degree you have, is how well you can do. If youd fail Aerospace Engineering but ace English Lit, go get a good GPA in English Lit.

In the Navy, STEM degrees can help with obtaining a scholarship or with getting a pilot slot through OCS. They are looked at more favorably then other degrees, but are not required.

Navy scholarship criteria is a 3 tier system. Tier 1 was engineering, Tier 2 was other STEM, Tier 3 was everything else. Tiers 1 and 2 are awarded much more frequently than Tier 3.

How Strict Is It

The award of Class One Medical certifications seems to be more lenient as science and studies have evolved. For example, it is now permissible to hold a Class One Medical if you have either Type 1 or 2 diabetes as long as you demonstrate you can effectively manage your blood sugar levels. If there are any doubts as to your fitness to hold a medical, you may be required to demonstrate your competency in the simulator .

Some conditions , whilst not immediately disqualifying, my require a restriction to be placed on your authority to operate. This is referred to as an Operational Multi-crew Limitation or OML. This allows you to exercise your class one medical privileges only as part of a multi-crew environment. Crew who have an OML restriction may not fly together as part of a 2 crew flight, and an OML holder may not fly with another pilot over the age of 60.

How Likely Is A Medical Waiver To Be Approved

Unfortunately, I cannot predict that outcome. I dont play a doctor on the Internet, and Im not involved in the recruiting process, MEPS processes, or any appeals boards. This is not my area of profession and I do not speak for the military. So I dont want to give any false impressions.

What I can tell you is that some medical conditions are simply ineligible for waivers. Other conditions may be waiverable, provided the member meets the medical standards for waivers as outlined in the DODI .

The best thing you can do is arm yourself with the applicable knowledge and have the willingness to do the legwork required to get the medical examinations, file the paperwork, etc.

Finally, dont lie when trying to join the military. It never ends well. In fact, it can end with a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and benefits, or even legal action. Its simply not worth the stain on your record.
