Will Aspirin And Other Pain Relievers Make My Asthma Worse

Allergies and Asthma: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

Aspirin and other drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be harmful for people who have asthma. Ibuprofen and naproxen are a few examples of NSAIDs. If you are allergic to aspirin, ask your doctor or pharmacist to make sure any new medicine you might take is not related to aspirin.

People who have asthma can usually take acetaminophen safely. This medicine is typically used to relieve fever and pain. Very rarely, even acetaminophen may make asthma worse, which has prompted further studies to explore the link between acetaminophen and asthma. If acetaminophen makes your asthma worse, tell your doctor. He or she can help you find another type of pain reliever.

How Can I Use Benadryl For My Dogs Allergies

Benadryl is an antihistamine which means its effective at preventing the most common allergy symptoms, though you shouldnt try giving any medicine to your dog if their airway is constricted.Dosage: The most common form of Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, though some formulations contain cetirizine instead . Cetirizine is also an effective antihistamine but is dosed slightly differently and is usually only used to treat dermatitis.Diphenhydramine Diphenhydramine is usually given to dogs at a dose of 1 mg/lb body weight every 8 hours, but from time to time a dose of 2 mg/lb is used instead. Regular strength pills contain 25 mg, but smaller dogs may be better suited to childrens Benadryl which contains smaller amounts of active ingredient.Cetirizine The most commonly recommended dose of cetirizine is as follows.

    Types Of Allergy Treatment

Managing symptoms of asthma and seasonal allergies can be a real task for people who suffer from both. While there is no cure for asthma or allergies there are treatment options available for individuals suffering with seasonal allergies, in most cases these treatment options can help to control symptoms. The choice of treatment option will vary and will depend on how severe your allergy reactions are and how they affect the quality of your life. Please discuss these options with your healthcare provider.

Seasonal Allergies And Copd: Tips To Avoid Complications

    Side effects of Benadryl,

Seasonal allergies are a nuisance for most people. For people with COPD, however, any extra condition that makes breathing difficult is automatically more serious.

According to a 2012 study at the Johns Hopkins Allergy and Asthma Center, people who had COPD and seasonal allergies experienced worsened respiratory symptoms such as coughing and wheezing.

They were also significantly more likely to need medical attention for their symptoms.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a group of lung conditions usually made up of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is commonly linked to a history of smoking cigarettes.

The condition results in airway blockages and mucus production, often causing serious breathing difficulties. Symptoms include:

    • persistent cough
    • feeling winded after activities that werent difficult in the past
    • coughing up mucus

Seasonal allergies are very common. Millions of people deal with the itchy, watery eyes and stuffy noses that seasonal allergies cause.

These symptoms occur when your immune system reacts to allergens youve inhaled such as:

    • pollen
    • mold
    • animal dander

Your immune system activates certain cells that produce substances, including histamine. These substances produce allergy symptoms.

People with COPD seem to be more sensitive to other breathing conditions. Of course, if you have COPD, you likely already have some trouble breathing.

    Benadryl For Dog Allergies

While dogs do get allergies, they often do not look like human allergies at all. Instead, dog allergies typically produce skin irritation, which can result in lots of scratching and biting. Respiratory symptoms, like sneezing and coughing, can also occur but are much rarer.

There are two main types of allergies in dogs: acute allergies and chronic allergies.

Acute allergies are short-term only. They can be caused by any number of things, including specific foods, insect bites, environmental irritants, and pollen. Benadryl works very well for mild to moderate acute allergies.

You should remove the underlying cause of your dogs allergies if possible. In the meantime, Benadryl can help control your dogs symptoms.

If your dog is experiencing extreme face swelling or difficulty breathing, it is essential to contact your vet instead of trying to treat the reaction at home.

Benadryl is also somewhat capable of treating anaphylaxis in dogs. In emergencies, it can be used to stop a deadly allergic reaction.

Chronic allergies are much rarer than acute allergies. They occur when a dog is allergic to many different substances or one prevalent substance. If a dog is allergic to many types of proteins, for example, it can be nearly impossible to clear their diet of all allergens. You might also not know what is causing your dogs allergies in the first place, which can make removing the underlying cause very difficult.

There Are Various Reasons Why You Could Be Experiencing A Cough Or Sore Throat

Post-nasal drip will also irritate your esophagus and occurs because of sinusitis or the more chronic allergic rhinitis also known as Hay Fever. Post-nasal drip occurs when your sinuses become clogged, hence the term plugged up. Usually, youll experience additional symptoms, such as nasal congestion, sneezing and a runny or itchy nose, similar to symptoms we notice when our allergies are acting up.

Even food allergies can cause a sore throat. Generally, youll notice almost instant swelling and enlarging of the throat, which can quickly advance to anaphylaxis. This is a much more serious allergic reaction than an irritated throat. Often allergy medications , such as Benadryl, can have side effects such as a dry, scratchy throat, along with dry mouth. Consult a doctor before taking any medication and monitor your reactions to these types of allergy medicines.

For those with more serious allergies, symptoms can last an entire season, especially in the springtime. The flu and common cold will generally only have symptoms for a week to two weeks. If it is allergies, you will most likely also experience:

    • tiredness
    • itchy, watery eyes
    • post-nasal drip

Its important if you are experiencing these symptoms to get tested by your local allergist. Rather than treating the symptoms, its best to find and treat the cause.

Safe Dose Of Benadryl For Dogs

If you decide that Benadryl is the right option for your dog, it is essential to stick to the correct dosage. Giving your dog too much can result in an overdose.

The amount of Benadryl largely depends on your dogs weight. Generally, it is recommended to give your dog 2-4 mg of Childrens Liquid Benadryl for every kilogram of body weight. Thats approximately 1 mg per 1 pound of bodyweight.

You should always start with the lowest dose and work your way up as needed. Benadryl takes about 30 minutes to work.

It is always a good idea to work with your vet when administering a new medication to your dog. Your dogs current drugs, health conditions, and age can affect their Benadryl dosage.

Be Smart Be Aware Of Allergy Medication Side Effects

Benadryl for Allergic Reactions – Should You Take It?

Smart use of allergy medications knowing how they treat symptoms, being aware of potential unwanted side effects and, most important, monitoring their effect on you and your health is just one step toward controlling allergy and cold symptoms. Even more important: knowing what you are allergic to and taking steps to prevent or reduce exposure.

If your allergy symptoms tend to last longer than two weeks or are not adequately controlled with over-the-counter medications, schedule an appointment with a board-certified allergist for a full diagnosis.

Antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids are intended for symptom relief. If antihistamines or intranasal corticosteroids are causing side effects such as drowsiness or other problems, there are other treatment options your doctor can offer you, such as allergen immunotherapy.

    Childrens Benadryl For Dogs

The type of Benadryl you give your dog also matters. Liquid Childrens Benadryl is the safest option for most dogs. It is the easiest to give and does not contain many of the extra ingredients other types of Benadryl often do, like alcohol.

Childrens Benadryl tablets can also be used for tiny dogs. Dosage for tablets is different than liquid and depends on the exact tablets you have. We recommend working with your vet when giving tablets as the concentration varies quite a bit.

Summary: Yes Adults Can Take Benadryl For Cough

So if youre tired of coughing and hacking from your cold or seasonal allergies, go get some Benadryl. As long as youre headed to bed anyway, take an appropriate dose and get the rest your body needs to recover.

If its for your kids? Do not use it for kiddos under the age of 2. For kids 2+, ask your doctor if theres any issue with it. Then, ask for the exact right dosing for your child. They should be able to guide you in the right direction.

    Feel better soon.

Can Allergies Cause A Sore Throat

Feel like you’re getting a cold? Are you sure its a cold youre catching? So, you might instead ask, “can allergies cause a sore throat?”

Can Allergies Cause A Sore Throat?

    March 30, 2021 by Asthma & Allergy Associates, P.C.

*Cough Cough* Whether we like it or not, the cold and flu season is on its way. Were all worried about catching that bug thats going around. But ask yourself, when you begin to feel those symptoms come on, are you sure its a cold youre catching? So, you might instead ask, can allergies cause a sore throat?

Often times, your sore throat can actually be caused by allergies, rather than the common cold. Irritation of the throat can develop for various reasons, one of which can be from allergens like pollen, dust, weeds, air pollution, and pet dander.

Post nasal drip, often caused by hay fever, can cause inflammation of the throat. Its important to look at the other symptoms youre experiencing in conjunction with a sore throat to determine the cause.

What Is The Best Allergy Medication

Sedating antihistamines asthma attack. Hay Fever & Asthma ...

The best choice of allergy medication is one which relieves symptoms without interfering with everyday tasks. Many allergy sufferers are finding that the newer, non-sedating antihistamines meet both these important parameters. It’s also important to find an allergy medication that can safely be used for the long term, since for many, allergies last an entire season if not the entire year. And finally, allergy medications should minimally react with other medications.

    Is Benadryl Safe For Dogs

Benadryl is considered to be a relatively safe medication for dogs, especially those that experience acute allergies.

It is important to note, though, that Benadryl is not cleared by the FDA for use in dogs or cats. While it can be used safely in most cases for your dog, there are no official dosing guidelines.

Furthermore, there is no dog-specific Benadryl. Instead, your furry friend will have to take the same over-the-counter medication that you take. This can create some problems because not all forms of Benadryl are safe for dogs.

For example, time-release capsules are not safe for canines. These capsules interact with dogs differently than humans. They may become chewed and break open, delivering too much medication at once.

While Benadryl typically refers to diphenhydramine HCl only, it can contain other active ingredients as well. These ingredients may or may not be safe for your dog. It is essential to check that the Benadryl you plan on using contains only diphenhydramine HCl. This information is located on the information panel.

What Other Drugs Could Interact With This Medication

There may be an interaction between diphenhydramine and any of the following:

    • aclidinium
    • zolpidem
    • zopiclone

If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

    • stop taking one of the medications,
    • change one of the medications to another,
    • change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
    • leave everything as is.

An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with this medication. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter , and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

Superior Safety Of Newer Generation H1

Although not without side effects, in contrast to older generation AHs, newer generation medications have minimal serious safety concerns . There have been no fatalities directly associated with the use of the newer generation AHs available in Canada. Accidental exposures of up to 30-fold ingestions of cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine have not resulted in any serious adverse events .

Two second-generation AHs have been associated with cardiac toxicity, however, both were removed from the market over 20 years ago. Since this time there have been no new concerns regarding cardiac toxicity and second- and third- generation AHs . Since the discovery of the above-noted cardiac toxicity, all second- and third-generation AHs are required by regulatory agencies to undergo thorough cardiac safety testing at standard and high off-label doses .

The level of sedation experienced by patients taking newer generation AHs varies by specific medication and the dose. Loratadine, fexofenadine, desloratidine, rupatadine and bilastine are the least-sedating antihistamines and, presently, loratadine, fexofenadine and desloratidine are the sanctioned choices for pilots, truck drivers and others who perform complex tasks like operating heavy machinery vs. cetirizine which is a low-sedating antihistamine .

Warning About Benadryl Use In Children And Babies

The Food and Drug Administration recommends that cough and cold products not be used in children under 2 years of age due to the risk of dangerous side effects, including sudden infant death. These products often contain diphenhydramine or other antihistamines, combined with other ingredients.

Before giving oral Benadryl to children under 6 years, or cough and cold products to children under 2 years, talk with your doctor. Your doctor may want to evaluate your childs symptoms. They can also recommend the most appropriate medication and dosage if treatment is needed.
