Return Used Inhalers To The Chemist

Inhaler recycling – GSK Complete the Cycle

All used inhalers should be returned to a pharmacy to be disposed of safely.

They can be disposed of by the pharmacist with other drugs waste, this is then thermally treated to destroy the greenhouse gases. This environmentally safe disposal route is available at all pharmacies and is paid for by NHS England.

Alternatively it is possible to recycle Inhalers at those pharmacies participating in the GSK scheme.

Can I Recycle My Asthma Inhaler

Posted by Heidi Lang.

If you want to know if you can recycle;your;asthma inhaler, then the simple answer to is yes thanks to the Complete the Cycle scheme.

Available in many local pharmacies and GP surgeries, Complete the Cycle is the first national recycling and recovery scheme for respiratory inhalers. With over 73 million respiratory inhalers being prescribed every year in the UK, Glaxo Smithkline and decided that they needed to set up a solution to the potential environmental impact of disposing of inhalers.

Since it was set up in 2011, over 1.2 million asthma inhalers have been recycled and recovered. This has saved carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 5,199 cars off UK roads.

How To Dispose Of Inhaler Pharmaceuticals

Fact Checked

Once those inhaler pharmaceuticals expire, it’s time to throw them away. Leaving expired medicine of any kind around the house is not safe. But how you get rid of the spent or expired inhaler depends on the chemicals in your inhaler and your town’s disposal policy. There’s no universal disposal method for this type of medication, especially since inhalers are pressurized and some may explode if incinerated. Once you’ve gotten the right information, disposing of the inhaler is easy.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Review the label on your inhaler first, advises the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 1. Older inhalers may contain chlorofluorocarbons , while newer ones are more environmentally friendly.

The FDA notes that you may be asked to recycle, throw away or take inhaler pharmaceuticals to a hazardous waste facility, depending on where you live and what type of inhaler you have.

Follow the disposal procedure recommended for your town and your type of inhaler. If you’re throwing the inhaler in a trash bin, wrap it in a plastic bag along with food scraps or coffee grounds to discourage children from picking it out of the trash.

Safe Medication Disposal At Home

If you do not live near a drop-off point, you can dispose of your drugs at home. The steps to dispose of medicines are:

  • Scratch out your personal information on the bottles, and throw out or recycle the container.
  • Place the leftover medicine in a plastic bag or plastic container. Do not crush tablets or capsules.
  • Mix pills or liquid with something unpleasant like used kitty litter or coffee grounds. You want to discourage any person or animal from going through your trash to take the medicine.
  • Seal or close the bag or container to prevent leaks.
  • Toss the container out with your regular trash.2
  • You should not flush drugs down the toilet or dissolve in the sink. Most water treatment plants are not set up to process drugs out of the water supply. This means that flushed drugs end up in our environment and can harm animals and plants.

Disposing Of Used Needles And Injectors

    Recycle Your Inhaler Properly

Used needles, lancets, syringes, and auto-injectors must be disposed of differently from pills. You want to protect others from accidental jabs.

Your doctorâs office, pharmacy, or hospital may take containers filled with used sharps. Some police and fire stations, health departments and community groups also offer safe medication disposal. Some drug companies offer mail-back programs. You can also buy a machine that destroys sharps at home. Search for âneedle melting deviceâ to learn more.

There are very specific instructions for inhaler disposal. If the inhaler or canister is empty, it can go in the usual rubbish collection.;If you arent sure if the inhaler or canister is empty or if there is still some medication left, return it to your pharmacy for disposal. You can put the puffers plastic case in the household recycling bin.;Its also dangerous to leave them in the cupboard at home, as you might reach for it during an attack and realise that it is empty!

The correct way to dispose of inhalers that still have medication in them properly or any other household medicine is to follow the three simple steps of:

How Can I Reuse Or Recycle Asthma Inhalers

    By louisa on 8 Aug 2007 | 31

Weve had another email from Am , this time saying:

My partner is asthmatic and so goes through inhalers. It seems a waste to throw them out, I dont think there is much to be done with reusing them though I may be wrong.

Does anyone know of anywhere these could be returned for reuse? Even if it is only the plastic outer casing?

My first thought would be to ask the chemist to not include the plastic part with each refill but if they get the complete inhaler from the pharmaceutical company already packaged up, they probably would end up just throwing them out from the shop. Does anyone know what the situation is with this?

And what about suggestions for reuse? Or recycling the individual bits?

    Hello

I thought i would share this with you as i was really impressed with it.

We were in Wales at the weekend and had to go to a pharmacy to collect a prescription and saw behind the counter a box for recycling asthma inhalers.

As i don’t live in Wales i asked if i could post them my inhalers so that they could be recycled and they are happy for me to do that for me

It’s just a shame that my local pharmacy don’t do it.

That’s a good idea! Wish mine did it. I take my used ones back because I’m not sure what else to do with them and saw somewhere that you’re supposed to, but I don’t think they recycle them.

This is in Co-op pharmacies only at present with nearly 300 round the country. They take GlaxoSmithKline inhalers which covers most for asthma except Atrovent I think? See here for more info co-operativepharmacy.co.uk/…

Hmm that seems to include Ventolin which is Allen & Hanburys and therefore a subsidiary of GSK. Not Symbicort though as that’s AstraZeneca who are not part of GSK. And Atrovent is Boehringer Ingelheim so also not GSK.

Imagine from the look of them that the various Clenil inhalers would be GSK though.

Well there are quite a few non-GSK inhalers out there, so not sure if the Co-op would recycle these.

Clenil, Fostair and Atimos are manufactured by Chiesi Limited.

Salamol and Qvar are by Ivax.

    Bricanyl is another by AstraZeneca.

    *Edit to add*

Pulmicort and Oxis are also by AstraZeneca.

In respect to this, how do you dispose of inhalers?

Believe it or not, inhalers cannot be disposed of in your medical waste disposal box, pharmaceutical disposal box or sharps container. Most inhalers are considered hazardous waste, and the easiest way to safely dispose of them is giving them to your local pharmacy.

Additionally, can you use old inhalers? If you‘re in an urgent situation and need asthma medication in order to breathe, only use an expired inhaler as a supplement until you‘re able to find an unexpired inhaler or you‘re able to seek medical treatment. Most inhalers are also safe to use up to one year after the expiration date.

Similarly one may ask, can asthma inhalers be recycled UK?

“Complete the Cycle from GlaxoSmithKline is the first UK-wide recycling and recovery scheme for all respiratory inhalers. You can safely and responsibly recycle your empty inhalers or inhalers you no longer require through any participating pharmacy.

How do you dispose of Albuterol?

According to knowyourotcs.org, follow these steps:

  • Mix medicines with an unpleasant substance, like kitty litter or used coffee grounds. Do not crush tablets or capsules.
  • Place the mix in a container, like a sealed plastic bag.
  • Throw the container in your trash.
  • Cool the cooking oil before you handle it.
  • Choose a non-breakable container with a resealable lid.
  • Toss the container of used oil in the trash.
  • Freeze and scoop the oil into the trash.

Flushing Drugs And The Water Supply

Some people wonder if its okay to flush certain medicines when a take back option is not easily available. There are concerns about the small levels of drugs that may be found in surface water, such as rivers and lakes, and in drinking water supplies.

The main way drug residues enter water systems is by people taking medicines and then naturally passing them through their bodies, says Raanan Bloom, Ph.D., an environmental assessment expert at the FDA. Many drugs are not completely absorbed or metabolized by the body and can enter the environment after passing through wastewater treatment plants.

The FDA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency take the concerns of flushing certain medicines in the environment seriously. Still, there has been no sign of environmental effects caused by flushing recommended drugs. In fact, the FDA to assess this concern, finding negligible risk of environmental effects caused by flushing recommended drugs.

What Can You Do With Old Inhalers

If you have got an accumulated share of inhalers, you may be looking into ways to dispose of them. But of course, recycling them is an excellent and environmentally conscious way to go about it.

At the same time, it is best to consider recycling as a last resort because recycling destroys the materials to make room for building new ones. When you repurpose or reuse an item until you find no use for it anymore, you can recycle it.

That way, you are cutting back on your consumption of renewable and non-renewable resources, thereby conserving those materials for future generations.

Well, there is not much you can do with your old inhaler as it is medical waste. However, you may consider these few ideas before you resort to thermally treating them.

Glaxo Starting First Us Inhaler Recycling Program

Chiesi launches postal asthma inhaler recycling scheme ...

TRENTON, N.J.Patients who use respiratory inhalers will be able to recycle the devices for the first time in the U.S., according to British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline PLC, which is launching its “Complete the Cycle” program Wednesday in drugstores in 31 cities.

;GlaxoSmithKline is the top seller of respiratory medicines in the U.S., with brands including the blockbuster Advair, but its new program will also recycle inhalers made by competitors. The program, starting in cities from Anchorage, Alaska, to Atlanta, will enable patients to drop off inhalers in boxes at participating pharmacies. When bags inside the boxes are full, they’ll be shipped to a Glaxo recycling contractor.

“We expect to bring back at least 100,000 inhalers in the 31 markets” in the first year, Jorge Bartolome, Glaxo’s senior vice president for its respiratory business, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.

The company will then decide deciding where to expand the program in the U.S. and internationally. It’s already running in the United Kingdom and a pilot program has begun in Chile.

“This is good for patients. This is good for pharmacists. This is good for the environment,” Bartolome said, noting the program is part of Glaxo’s ongoing efforts to minimize its environmental impact, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities and limiting waste and use of water.

A scheme to recycle respiratory inhalers, which has cut carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking around 8,600 cars off UK roads, is ending.

The Complete the Cycle programme, run by pharmaceutical firm GSK and thought to be the only scheme of its kind in the UK, is to close at the end of September 2020, the company confirmed to;The Pharmaceutical Journal.

GSK said that since 2011, when the scheme began, more than two million inhalers had been recycled and recovered, saving a similar amount of;CO2 emissions as that produced by;8,665 cars in one year. The scheme recycled inhalers made by other manufacturers, as well as those made by GSK.

The NHS Long-Term Plan, published in January 2019, highlighted the fact that 73 million respiratory inhalers are prescribed every year in the UK. Metered dose inhalers contain hydrofluorocarbons a type of greenhouse gas to help propel the dose into the patients respiratory system.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says that MDIs have an estimated carbon footprint equivalent to 500g of;CO2per dose. The long-term plan states that switching patients to lower carbon products, such as dry powder inhalers which have a footprint of just 20g could contribute 4% of the NHSs commitment to cut carbon emissions overall by 57% by 2030.

    What To Do With Inhalers

    10 AUG 21 | 1 minute read

Inhalers shouldn’t be thrown in the bin. When inhalers end up in landfill, environment-harming residual gas from canisters is released into the atmosphere.

Up until September 2020 inhalers were collected for recycling by GlaxoSmithKline but unfortunately this service is no longer available. There is another scheme running but participation varies by pharmacy .

Recycling is constantly evolving so this might change in the future as GSK havent ruled out working with the NHS on wider, joint working across industry rather than their own standalone approach.

For now, if your local pharmacy is not on the list above its still important that they be returned to be disposed of safely rather than entering landfill where residual gas from canisters can be released into the atmosphere.

Sadly the complete the cycle inhaler recycling scheme is now closing down, so getting your inhaler recycled is more difficult. A smaller recycling scheme is run by Teva in association with Terracycle .

The plastic and aluminium will be recycled, and more importantly any left over propellant gas is captured.

Dont put your inhaler in kerbside recycling it will not be recycled.

If you dont have any facilities nearby to recycle your inhaler, it is still well worth taking metered dose inhalers back to your pharmacy. The inhaler will be incinerated in medical waste, which is a surprisingly good way to dispose of them. The damaging propellants are broken down by the high temperatures into other products which are far less powerful greenhouse gases. More details available here on the recycle now site.

Incorrectly Recycling Your Inhaler Is Damaging The Environment

    Asthma diary- day 1.

ost of the nations asthma sufferers are incorrectly disposing of their inhalers and unintentionally contributing to carbon emissions increase, new research reveals.

While most local authorities can recycle certain plastics, some inhalers contain plastics and glasses that are not easily recyclable.

Recent research from pharmaceutical company GSK uncovered that Brits suffering from asthma surveyed were simply disposing of their inhalers in the general waste. A third were using their kerbside recycling service, wrongly thinking they will be recycled.

Progress has been made in the recycling of respiratory inhalers, with over one million being recycled over the last five years as part of a national scheme. However, as the research shows, there is still far to go when it comes to correctly disposing of them.

To ensure respiratory inhalers are recovered and recycled correctly, the pharmaceutical company launched a scheme which allows people to bring their used inhalers into a pharmacy for recovery.

Inhalers Can Still Have Medication Left

During a study done by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, they found that 29% of inhalers that are disposed still have medication left in them.

    While for the consumer its just a waste of medication, if their inhalers end up in a landfill the leftover medication can leak out and as a result contaminate the local water supplies for an entire community.;
