Essential Oils And Asthma

Little is known as to whether or not essential oils are safe for treating asthma. Dr. Joy Hsu from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you never replace your prescribed therapies and always consult your physician before supplementing your medication regimen. Some common essential oils are claimed as helpful in treating asthma.

How To Use Essential Oils To Cure A Sore Throat

A viral bronchitis infection can also give you a scratchy sore throat that makes it difficult and painful to swallow. Many of the essential oil steam inhalation recipes for bronchitis will also do a two-fold job of helping ease a sore throat.

You can also use some essential oils to make a soothing rub to help ease the pain of a sore throat. This is how to use essential oils to treat a sore throat:

  • Mix 5 drops of peppermint oil, 5 drops of tea tree oil, 5 drops of any other essential oil on this list and mix with 1-oz. sweet almond oil or other carrier oil.
  • Take a little of the essential oil remedy on your fingertips and massage into your neck just below your ears.
  • Take some more essential oil and rub into the sides of your neck and continue to the top of your ribcage.
  • Use 3 times a day to help get rid of a sore throat.
  • Simple Tips To Stop Asthma Waking You At Night In The Long

You dont have to just accept your night-time asthma symptoms as normal.

    • Using your preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed, will build up protection in your airways and keep your asthma symptoms under control, so theyre less likely to wake you at night.
    • If youre having asthma symptoms at night or noticing asthma symptoms when you first wake up, you should make a same day appointment to see your GP or asthma nurse. Symptoms that keep you awake at night are one of the signs you might be at risk of an asthma attack.

    Its also important to:

    • Use your written asthma action plan to help you understand how to manage your symptoms and what to do if they get worse.
    • Go for regular asthma reviews with your GP or asthma nurse. They can check youre using your inhalers correctly. Its also a chance to talk about any triggers that might be affecting your sleep.

Essential Oils For Treating Asthma Precautions

Essential oils may not always be an ideal treatment for asthma. After all, asthma attacks can be triggered by allergies, so those with allergic reactions to the scent of specific or all oils will have their attacks triggered by them.

As a result, if you experience attacks or a deterioration in your breathing after using an essential oil, the better approach is to seek conventional medical advice.

Almost no drugs work for everyone, and essential oils are no exception.

Many sufferers may benefit from essential oils and use them to relieve the mild attacks, but still keep a prescribed inhaler on hand to deal with the severe cases. If you are sure you are not allergic to the scent of oils, this is probably an approach that you may want to consider, as it limits synthetic drugs to only the necessary cases.

Essential oils and medications are not mutually exclusive, and the former can often support the systems of your body until the latter becomes necessary. Think of it as a complementary, rather than an alternative, treatment. Make sure to consult with your doctor before using essential oils for treating asthma.

    Help For Your Head Cold

I always seem to get a cold in December as the holiday season is coming to a close. Maybe its the lack of sunlight. Here in Canada we are chronically sun deprived from mid-September till the beginning of May. December is the worst month for darkness, cloud, and gloom. Maybe its the sugar binge and lack of sleep, as we prepare for the holidays, party and stay up late visiting friends. Maybe its the dryer air beside the wood cookstove. It all adds up to more colds, sinus headaches, nasal congestion, coughs, and the general malaise of the season.

Our bodies are made to do exactly what we need them to do to fight infection, expel toxins, and maintain our health and well being. When we have a cold or virus, our bodies response of coughing, nasal congestion, chest congestion, and fever is the correct reaction to help us return to balanced health. Most allopathic prescriptions for colds and flu manage symptoms, unclog the stuffy nose, stop the coughing, or lower the fever basically putting the brakes on our natural immune reaction to sickness. Does that sound like a healthy thing to do? Dont we want our immune systems to work efficiently to rid our bodies of sickness and disease, even if that means being a little uncomfortable for a short time?

    When To See A Doctor

The essential oils for bronchitis and remedies mentioned in this article should help to reduce the severity of your symptoms and prevent bronchitis becoming more serious. Bronchitis usually takes 10 to 14 days to clear up and you should see a doctor if your symptoms last longer.

Dr. Jennifer Robinson on WebMD recommends visiting your doctor if you have symptoms of bronchitis and the following conditions:

    • You cough up thick yellow or green phlegm or you notice traces of blood in it.
    • You have a fever and night sweats.
    • Along with an irritating cough, you also have shortness of breath and wheezing.
    • You cant sleep because of your bronchitis symptoms.
    • The cough lasts longer than 2 or 3 weeks.

    Natural Asthma Remedies For Kids

    B12 Deficiency and Childhood Asthma

Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD, the fearless leader in integrative medicine has long espoused using B12 injections for treating childhood asthma. He cites many articles from 1931 onward that demonstrate hypochlorhydria in infants and adults, which can be normalized with parenteral B12 injections. One study from 1935 found that 88 percent of children with asthma, from one to 10 years old, had low free acidity. Another study found that after gastric and jejunal biopsies from patients with asthma after having a single dose of cows milk, resulted in 80 percent subtotal villous atrophy .

In a 1979 study, it was determined that children with milk allergies had flattened, disorganized gastric villi . Besides allergy elimination, he found that administering betaine hydrochloride-with pepsin was also helpful in children and adults. The use of fish oils, magnesium, B6 and vitamin C also improved outcomes.

    Homeopathic Complex Remedies

Every homeopathic company has complex homeopathic remedies for the respiratory system. Remember Xs mean the substance has been diluted 10 times, so they are very diluted and safe. 4X, for example means the substance has been diluted 10 times for four times. By the way, Cs are a hundred fold dilutions. Some remedies go as high as 50,000 C, or higher. These are all low dose remedies.

    Lack Of Research And Approval

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America say that there is no evidence to prove that essential oils can help people with asthma.

In fact, some may be dangerous and trigger symptoms in the same way that air fresheners and other chemicals do.

The AAFA do not recommend using essential oils to treat asthma.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not regulate the use of essential oils for any conditions, including asthma, but they have issued warnings about some products.

Since the FDA do not approve their use, there are no regulations to control what an essential oil contains. As a result, users cannot be sure that the ingredients are pure.

    Are Alternative Treatments Safe

Essential oils are not regulated the same way prescription medications are for asthma. Alternative medicine treatments do not undergo scientific review and may not be safe.

There currently is no scientific evidence that supports essential oils help people with asthma. In fact, diffused oils may cause greater harm to those who suffer from asthma. The FDA has issued warning letters to essential oil companies who make unsubstantiated claims about their uses.

Talk to your doctor before substituting an alternative medicine for an asthma medicine prescribed by your doctor. While the oils are considered natural, they release VOCs which have been associated with increased asthma symptoms.

Before substituting essential oils for medications, consult with a trained physician. If you suffer from asthma, get clear answers from the Allergy & Asthma Specialists of North Florida. How To Use Essential Oils For Symptoms Of Asthma

The best time to use an essential oil treatment for asthma is between attacks, not while youre having one or experiencing an increase in symptoms.

It all depends on the person, on the ailment, on how you use it, says Birgitta Lauren, a Los Angeles-based aromatherapist. However, a reduction in symptoms can take from 10 minutes to weeks try each separately.

Here are some instructions to help you get started:

  • Mix 2 to 3 drops of an essential oil in an ounce of a carrier oil. Carrier oils are neutral oils that dilute the essential oil, helping a little bit go a long way. Carrier oils also help spread the fragrance around so youre not as likely to be overwhelmed by the scent.
  • Spread the oil combination on your chest and inhale the scent for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Wipe clean.
  • If youre using lavender essential oil, consider inhaling steam.

  • Fill a bucket or bowl with steaming water.
  • Add 2 to 3 drops of the lavender essential oil to the water and gently stir.
  • Place your face directly over the water, being careful not to touch the hot water. Drape a towel over your head so it covers both your head and the sides of the bowl.
  • Inhale deeply for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Take a break for a few minutes and then repeat 2 to 3 more times.
  • Why I Picked These Ingredients:

    Olbas Bath

Dead Sea Salt is famous for its therapeutic, mineral-rich quality. It is antiseptic and rich in magnesium and other trace minerals. It was found that people who worked in mineral rich salt mines didnt get colds and asthma the way other people did. The salt is antiseptic and encourages freer breathing, reducing swollen sinuses.

Eucalyptus is very useful for colds and chest congestion. It is expectorant, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory. It is useful for bronchitis, sniffles, sinus congestion, and hoarse scratchy throat. *See below for specific contraindications for the use of Eucalyptus in children.

Lavender is antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, calming, antispasmodic. It reduces headaches, and is especially useful for tension headaches and sinus headaches. It reduces nasal congestion.

Tea Tree oil is antiseptic, antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic. It is decongestant, reducing nasal congestion and chest congestion, and stimulates immune system to heal the body.

Marjoram is sweet smelling. It is antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, calming, relaxing. It calms coughing and bronchial spasms through its anti-spasmodic action. It clears mucous from the lungs, and relieves pain.

Some Rosemary essential oils contain ketones and should not be used by children under 10 or by pregnant women.

    How to use:

How To Use Essential Oils To Get Rid Of Mucus

Many essential oils are potent enough to make a natural expectorant to eliminate mucus and reduce the amount of phlegm you have. Regularly inhaling essential oils can also have a calmative effect and reduces bouts of coughing.

To make your own remedy to release mucus in your respiratory tract, throat, and sinuses, this is what you should do:

  • Put 5 drops of eucalyptus oil, 5 drops of tea tree oil, and 5 drops of any of the other essential oils in a large bowl of hot water.
  • Place your head over the bowl and put a towel over your head.
  • Breathe in deeply through your nose and mouth to let the essential oil steam break up mucus in your bronchial tubes.
  • Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until your symptoms of coughing up phlegm have gone for good.
  • Why Asthma Can Wake You Up At Night

If your asthma isnt under control, you might get more symptoms at night.

There are several reasons why this might happen:

    • At night, your body produces fewer natural steroid hormones, which can affect your symptoms and more of the cells that cause inflammation in your airways.
    • When you lie flat on your back, gravity places extra pressure on your chest and lungs, making it harder to breathe. This position can also trigger a cough, as mucus in your nose could drip down to the back of your throat.
    • Your bedroom might contain triggers that can make your asthma worse, such as dust mites in your mattress, pillows and blankets.
    • Pet hair is a common asthma trigger, so avoid letting your pet sleep on your bed, and ideally keep them out of your bedroom.
    • Mould is another common asthma trigger, so check your bedroom for damp patches on walls and mould growing around windows.
    • Lots of people find triggers their asthma symptoms. When pollen is high, try using a fan to keep your bedroom cool rather than opening a window.
    • Some people are triggered by cold air at night, or by sleeping in a cold room. If this is you, keep windows closed and keep the heating on low in the bedroom if you can.

If your GP has prescribed steroid pills for your asthma, youll probably be advised to take them in the morning after food, as they might cause difficulty sleeping if you take them at night, but always take them exactly as prescribed.

    Can Essential Oils Help Asthma

Although essential oils may sound like an appealing natural treatment for asthma, experts warn they come with risks, and for people with asthma, they may actually make symptoms worse.

    Lauren BedoskySanjai Sinha, MDiStock

Asthma is a chronic breathing condition that affects millions of Americans. More than 25 million people in the United States have asthma, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The respiratory disease causes sporadic inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lungs, leading to spells of , chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Depending on the severity of the condition, people with asthma may experience mild symptoms or a flare-up of symptoms, an asthma attack.” In individuals with milder cases of asthma, symptoms may occur rarely and be easy to manage with treatment but for others with whats considered severe asthma, symptoms occur daily or more frequently and are difficult to manage with treatment, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

People with asthma typically control their condition with daily medicine to lower airway inflammation, and often carry inhalers with medicine for short-term relief during an asthma attack. And when it comes to asthma treatment, its important to note that for some people home remedies and lifestyle changes, like quitting smoking, avoiding asthma triggers, and maintaining a healthy diet and weight can help with symptom management.

    Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Roman chamomile is one of the most popular natural interventions against asthma. Since researchers seem not to have studied it, the evidence is still anecdotal, but strong.

Its relaxant effects, which also make it a good sleep aid, may be responsible for relaxing the bronchial muscles that narrow the airways during an asthma attack.

    How to use it

If you have a warning that an asthma attack is on its way, put some Roman chamomile oil in your diffuser, lie down, relax, and inhale deeply.

    Steam Inhalation And Bath Soak

There are several ways to inhale essential oil steam:

  • Put several drops of your chosen essential oil in a large pot with water. Heat it on the stove until it almost boils. Remove it, and inhale the steam directly for the antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects. You can inhale it through a face cloth if it burns your face. You can also use the same steam inhalation for treating sinus infection.
  • Mix 10-12 drops of essential oil per 1 oz of carrier oil and add into your bathwater. Sit in the bath for 30 minutes while inhaling the steam constantly. You can also add 1 cup of Epsom salt to enhance the effect of relieving body aches and sore muscles.
