    How Asthma Is Treated

While there is no cure for asthma, there are a number of treatments that can help control the condition.

Treatment is based on two important goals, which are:

    • relieving symptoms;
    • preventing future symptoms and attacks

For most people, this will involve the occasional or, more commonly, daily use of medications, usually taken using an inhaler. However, identifying and avoiding possible triggers is also important.

You should have a personal asthma action plan agreed with your doctor or nurse that includes information about the medicines you need to take, how to recognise when your symptoms are getting worse, and what steps to take when they do so.

These symptoms are often worse at night and early in the morning, particularly if the condition is not well controlled. They may also develop or become worse in response to a certain trigger, such as exercise or exposure to an allergen.

Read our page on the;causes of asthma for more information about potential triggers.

Speak to your GP if you think you or your child may have asthma. You should also talk to your doctor or asthma nurse if you have been diagnosed with asthma and you are finding it difficult to control the symptoms.

Why Are My Allergies So Bad This Year 2021

Why Has the Allergy Season of 2021 Been So Bad? The bad allergy season so far is largely the result of the mild winter seen across most of the country. Mold that would normally die off in the winter months remained due to warmer temperatures. That, combined with unusually high levels of tree pollen, has set off severe allergies for many people Year over year, we’re finding climate change is a major factor in worsening symptoms for spring and fall pollen seasons, said Kenneth Mendez, the CEO and president of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. What Are My Triggers

Most people are allergic to more than one trigger and sometimes the response is different, so you could get itchy eyes around cats but a runny nose during;pollen season. The severity of the;allergic reaction varies between people;and depends on the circumstances.;A reaction may not be immediate.

    Sometimes it can be fairly obvious what triggers your asthma. If you have;symptoms after coming in contact with cats or;dogs then pets are probably one of your triggers. The same applies for contact with smoke from cigarettes or open fires.;

Triggers like pollen can be more difficult to determine because the allergens are not visible.;It is important to keep a diary of when you experience symptoms and note where you were at the time, what the weather conditions were like and what things you were exposed to including stress.

What Are The Symptoms Of An Asthma Flare

Common symptoms are coughing, shortness of breath , a feeling of tightness in the chest and wheezing. It’s important to watch yourself every day for symptoms of asthma. You may have only one or two of these symptoms.

Another clue that your asthma is flaring up is that you have to take extra doses of your quick-relief asthma medicine more than twice a week because of these symptoms.

Who Is Most Vulnerable To Coronavirus Heres What You Need To Know

Lydia Hutton, from Cardiff, has also been taking notice of her breathing a lot more than usual and has stopped a couple of times to think if she needs her reliever. As a young child, Hutton was hospitalised due to her asthma. Day to day, its manageable, but she cant go for more than 24 hours without her preventive inhaler before experiencing symptoms. Taking my medication has become the same as brushing my teeth, I have to do it but as long as I do it doesnt restrict the things I want to do, she says.

Since coronavirus, shes more aware of making sure her inhaler is on hand, and ensures she has her reliever inhaler with her at all times.

I would often go weeks without knowing where the blue reliever was but now I know I have a spare in the car and one on my person every day. She has also printed and updated her asthma action plan.

Some sufferers are managing right now. Kirsty Warwick, 47, from Wimbledon, has mild asthma and has done since her 20s. In preparation, she got her next two months of inhalers just before lockdown so she felt more secure at home. Her husband was concerned before lockdown that she shouldnt be going out and about, but so far during the pandemic, shes felt well and healthy.

When I had a cough a few weeks ago, I was wary, she says, but I put it down to hay fever as I had no other symptoms and it wasnt persistent. Warwick has also reduced her trips out, which she says is easier now kids arent at school.

    Path To Improved Well Being

Your doctor will give you a peak flow meter to monitor your asthma. Use it regularly. Keep a log of your results. The meter is a plastic tube that you blow into several times a day. It checks how well your lungs are working. The results tell you when you need to take extra medicine or call your doctor.

Stay in good, overall health. Maintain a good weight and eat a balanced diet. Get regular exercise. If you smoke, quit. Avoid secondhand smoke.

Why Asthma Symptoms Can Vary With The Weather

So why do asthma symptoms seem to get worse with every change in the weather? Although it seems confusing, there are some annual trends, as well as reasons why asthma symptoms are worse at particular times of the year.

For example, severe asthma episodes tend to peak during the autumn months, especially among children. A 2001 study that examined tens of thousands of asthma hospitalizations in Canada over a 12-year period, for instance, found that there were more than twice as many hospitalizations in October as there were in July or August. Other studies have discovered similar patterns.

However, one study conducted in Detroit found that when there was a rapid 10-degree rise in temperature or a 10% rise in humidityas can happen in spring and summerhospitalizations for children with asthma increased in the next day or two.

In truth, asthma symptoms can flare at any time of year due to well-known asthma triggers, such as pet dander, secondhand smoke, and exercise. But knowing the triggers that can vary by seasonsuch as pollen, temperature, humidity, pollution, and virusescan help people with asthma figure out if they should be stepping up their medication.

In fact, the main culprit is believed to be cold-and-flu season, which kicks into gear once kids head back to school. Classrooms filled with runny noses, and grimy hands are breeding grounds for cold and flu viruses, which schoolchildren inevitably spread to their families.

    How Is Asthma Diagnosed

WHY IS MY HAIR FALLING OUT RIGHT NOW? Coronavirus Stress ...

Asthma can be hard to diagnose. To find out if you have asthma, your health care provider takes your health history, does a physical exam and listens to your breathing.

You also may get a lung function test called spirometry. This is a test that checks how well your lungs work. During the test, you take a deep breath and exhale into a machine called a spirometer. This machine measures the amount of air you breathe in and out. It also measures how fast you can breathe. When youre pregnant, normal changes in your body can make you short of breath. This test can help your provider know if shortness of breath is a common complication of pregnancy or if its caused by asthma.

This Is What It’s Like To Have Asthma During The Coronavirus Pandemic

Were here to guide you through the coronavirus lockdown. for daily tips, advice, how-tos and escapism.

How do I feel emotionally? Im anxious like many people, Julie Thompson Dredge, 42, from Petersfield, tells me, when I ask how shes managing her asthma. Im living with a certain amount of dread, doing things like sorting out my will should the worst happen as I know I could be in trouble if I got coronavirus.

Many people are anxious about their health right now, but its worse for those classed as vulnerable. Back in March, the government released guidelines for those at very high risk if they were to contract coronavirus and that included people with asthma. The national charity Asthma UK is constantly updating its guidelines to make sure people are effectively managing their condition.

But whats it really like for sufferers?

Thompson Dredge was diagnosed at 18 the first week she went away to uni, when she was hospitalised and has managed the condition ever since. In the past shes dealt with bad flare ups, A&E and ICU visits due to her symptoms.

Its under control at the moment, she says, but the pandemic has meant Im ultra vigilant about keeping on top of my medication: taking it twice daily, making sure I have three months supply at home, and its also made me really conscious about not going out.

How To Deal With Asthma And Fall Allergies

If pollen is a trigger for your asthma, then the fall is likely to be a challenging season for you, especially if you also have allergic rhinitis . If this is the case, you’re in good company: Around 80% of adults and children who have asthma also have hay fever, as compared to 15% to 40% of the general population.

With pollen from ragweed and other allergens on the rise, you may be at an increased risk of asthma attacks in the autumn. You can mitigate this risk by preparing for the season by taking antihistamines and being especially strict about adhering to your asthma management strategies.

The Biggest Change That I Believe Reversed My Sons Asthma Was

I noticed a significant reduction in my sons asthma when we made the switch to raw goats milk. Actually, that was one of the major reasons we decided to raise and milk goats. Since goats milk has smaller protein and fat globules than cows milk, it digests in about 30 minutes compared with 3 hours. So much easier! My son also had a lot less phlegm from drinking goats milk, which I believe is an indicator that it helped with his asthma. Phlegm = inflammatory response.

Before you comment: You may think this milk sensitivity was just a tendency in my son, but in fact MANY asthmatic children have undiagnosed milk;sensitivities;allergies and improve greatly on raw milk.

When our goats were dry and we had to purchase milk for a few months, we bought raw cows milk and he did fine on that too. When we decided to buy some store-bought organic, cows milk, I noticed him coughing;right away. Even I felt like I personally had a stuffy nose and phlegm in my throat. Homogenization makes the globules even bigger and harder to digest, which causes a lot of problems.

What I think made the asthma go away altogether was our huge reduction in processed foods. I dont purchase any processed food anymore, although being kids, they get some probably a couple times a month from a soccer game or birthday party. I let them make their own decision whether or not to partake in that food because I dont believe in depriving them.

Chest Pain After An Asthma Attack

WHY IS MY GOLF SWING SO BAD!?

So its 24 hours later. My breathing is normal, but my chest is sore and stiff. This is normal after an asthma attack, especially if it was bad enough that your accessory muscles were utilized to help yo inhale. They hurt because they normally aren’t used, and when they are used small muscles fibers on these muscles are torn, causing pain and stiffness the next day.

This is no different than the pain and soreness you feel after a good, strong workout, the kind of workout you do to make your muscles bigger and stronger. Of course, in our case, we dont want our accessory muscles getting bigger and stronger. Still, because I used them yesterday, they hurt today.

What is the treatment for this? ;As with the pain and soreness due to any other workout, this pain and soreness will go away in a day or two. If you want to take a Tylenol or something that is up to you and your doctor to determine. As for me, I just wait it out. Actually, as for me, I dont let myself get this bad anymore. Of course, if you are as familiar with this thing we call asthma as I am, sometimes it happens even when we dont plan on it. So thats why we take our daily asthma controller medicines, have asthma action plans, and avoid our asthma triggers the best we can.>

So, I shared my experience with asthma-related chest pain. For me, it is a common early warning sign. Every asthmatic is different. So, do you ever experience it? Let us know in the comments below?
