Currently, ICS are the cornerstone for management of chronic asthma across all severity levels, with the majority of benefit seen with low ICS doses, and with medium-dose to high-dose ICS providing an approximately equal clinical benefit to a daily dose of oral prednisolone of 7.5â10 mg, with greatly reduced risk of adverse events.

What Else Do I Need To Know
Your child may get infections easier while taking corticosteroids, and should avoid people who are sick or have infections. If your child is exposed to chickenpox or measles, tell your doctor right away.

You and your child should know the names of all the medicines he or she is taking. with anyone involved in your child’s care.
Always make sure you have enough medicine on hand for red zone management of your child’s asthma. Each time you refill the prescription, check to see how many refills are left. If no refills are left the pharmacy will need 2 or 3 days to contact the clinic to renew the prescription.
Check the label and expiration date before giving each dose. Ask your pharmacist what to do with outdated or unused medicines. If there is no “take-back” program:
- Empty them into a leak-proof container.
- Add a liquid to help pills break down.
- Add coffee grounds, dirt, flour, kitty litter, salt, or other substance.
- Put on the lid and throw it in the trash.

Both long-term and short-term OCS use in patients with asthma are associated with steroid-related adverse effects. Risks of OCS-related complications including ED presentations, hospitalizations and mortality escalate with increasing OCS exposure., , This is true both for the cumulative dose derived from repeated acute courses and also for chronic therapy as individuals taking at least 10 mg per day of prednisolone-equivalent are at substantially higher risk of developing musculoskeletal, metabolic and psychiatric issues. Those who experience steroid-related adverse effects also have a higher disease burden and exacerbation risk, compounding the detrimental effects on their health.
How And When To Take It
It’s important to take prednisolone as your doctor has advised.
The usual dose varies between 5mg and 60mg daily – 1ml of liquid prednisolone is usually equal to 10mg.
Unless your doctor or pharmacist gives you different instructions, it’s best to take prednisolone as a single dose once a day, straight after breakfast. For example, if your dose is 40mg daily, your doctor may tell you to take 8 tablets all at the same time.
Take prednisolone with breakfast so it doesn’t upset your stomach. Taking prednisolone in the morning also means it’s less likely to affect your sleep.
If your prednisolone tablets are labelled as “enteric coated” or “gastro resistant”, you can take these with or without food but make sure to swallow them whole. Do not take indigestion medicines 2 hours before or after taking enteric coated or gastro resistant tablets.

Prednisone Doses For Cats
The following is a guideline for typical use of the drug in cats. It must not replace your veterinarians advice for your individual pet.
Veterinarians can administer prednisone orally or through injection. How much they should administer depends on the cats condition and how the cat responds to the steroid.

Background: People with asthma sometimes have asthma attacks, wherein their symptoms such as cough, chest tightness and difficulty breathing become worse. Many patients with asthma attacks are treated with steroids, which are usually given as a short course of tablets or liquid medicine. Steroids work by reducing inflammation in the airways in the lungs, but they can have side effects .
Review question: We set out to compare different doses or durations of oral steroids given to people having asthma attacks. This is an important issue because different doses and durations of oral steroids are used for asthma attacks in different countries, and we do not know which regimen is most likely to improve symptoms while minimising unpleasant side effects.
Study characteristics: We included 18 studies involving 2438 adults and children. Studies compared two types of steroid – prednisolone and dexamethasone – or two different doses or durations of either drug. The smallest study included just 15 people, and the largest 638. Studies followed people for between seven days and six months to see what happened to them. The evidence presented here is current to April 2016.
Any changes to the way in which asthma attacks are currently managed with oral steroids would need to be supported by larger studies than have been conducted so far.
