Are Asthma Medicines Safe When You’re Breastfeeding

Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reactions)

Asthma medicines do get into your breast milk, but the amounts are very low and are safe for the baby. If you take high doses of certain asthma medicines, like theophylline, your baby may become irritable or have trouble sleeping. To help prevent this, take your asthma medicines 3 or 4 hours before the next feeding. Your provider and your babys provider can help you adjust your medicine schedule so you and your baby can get the health benefits of breastfeeding.

Tips To Reduce The Risk Of Exercise

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and can help to control asthma symptoms. Many top athletes, including Olympic medallists, have asthma.

Tips to reduce the risk of asthma symptoms during exercise include:

  • Manage and control your asthma with preventer medication so you are less likely to have symptoms.
  • Always carrying your reliever medication with you.
  • Warm up as usual before exercising your doctor may recommend taking reliever medication 15 minutes before exercising.
  • Cool down after exercising asthma symptoms can appear up to 30 minutes after exercising.
  • If symptoms appear, start asthma first aid and return to exercise only if you can breathe freely. If symptoms appear a second time, start asthma first aid and do not return to exercise. Visit your doctor for a review of your asthma symptoms.

Spring Allergies And Asthma

Jessica Olah

Trees with new buds and flowerbeds waking up may be beautiful, but they can release pollen that those with hayfever and/or allergic asthma dread. The often quick rise in pollen counts and more time spent outdoors as the weather warms up can wreak havoc on symptom management.

Taking daily allergy medications like Allegra or Zyrtec can help control your spring allergy symptoms and temper the allergic response that can worsen asthma. However, be sure to start them a few weeks before the start of the season as they take a while to be at full strength.

At the same time, check on your rescue inhaler to see if you need a refill so you don’t run out at a bad time.

If you already take an allergy medication year-round, talk to your doctor about whether you need to add a second medication or explore other treatment alternatives.

Tips To Reduce Exposure To Mould Spores

The best strategy for any allergy is to avoid the allergy trigger. For mould spores, this can be difficult, but you can certainly take action to reduce mould in your home.

To reduce mould in your home:

  • Treat existing mould on surfaces such as bathroom ceilings and walls with fermented white vinegar solution.
  • Prevent water damage on carpets and remove if wet.
  • Eliminate sources of dampness leaking pipes or seeping groundwater.
  • Change filters regularly in heating and air-conditioning units, and have heating ducts cleaned often.
  • Ventilate bathrooms and seal leaks.
  • Avoid indoor pot plants, organic mulch and compost.
  • Treat rising damp immediately.

Should I Be Concerned About Air Pollution In My Home

What are mild asthma symptoms â Health

Yes. Your home might even be a high priority public health risk. This is probably where you are exposed to most allergens and irritants.

Home is where you cook, eat, sleep, bathe, groom, relax and play with pets. Indoor air pollution can pose a health risk. Your home may have small particles in the air or damaging gases such as carbon monoxide.

  • Household cleaners and air-freshening sprays or devices
  • Fuel-burning heat sources
  • Smoke from cooking, candles, fireplaces or tobacco
  • Toxic fumes that are off-gassing from new products
  • Attached garages that store cars, motorcycles or lawnmowers
  • Building and paint products
  • Pesticides
  • Radon
  • Humidity that allows mold to grow
  • Cosmetics, perfumes and hair sprays

What Is Allergy Induced Asthma

May 22, 2014

For many people with asthma, spring can be a very challenging time of the year. Rapid changes in the weather and lingering upper respiratory viruses can both cause breathing difficulties. But for 60-80% of asthmatics, they also have environmental allergies that can cause sudden onset and/or chronic asthma symptoms.

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood health condition and causes recurrent episodes of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing. Asthma involves the lungs, where inflammation is present at all times. In addition, the airways of asthmatic children are very sensitive and hyper-reactive, causing sudden onset constriction and tightening.

Pollen allergies are often most severe in the spring, which is when trees start to pollinate. Allergy symptoms frequently include itchy/watery eyes, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, throat clearing, and cough. For children who have asthma and allergies, exposure to airborne allergens can cause asthma attacks, poor sleep quality, missed school days, and fatigue, which can affect learning.

Pollination patterns for outdoor allergens are pretty consistent throughout the year, but may vary based upon location. In general, trees pollinate in the spring, grasses/weeds during the summer, and ragweed in the autumn. Dry, warm windy days cause the highest levels of pollen, whereas rainy days tend to lower levels of pollen, but this is when mold spores increase.

Allergic Triggers Of Asthma

Allergies are a common cause of asthma symptoms. Most people identify more than one allergy but the symptoms experienced vary from person to person and can include hay fever, skin reactions, asthma or a life-threatening severe allergic reaction .

If you are allergic to a substance that causes your asthma symptoms to flare up, you can take action to avoid or reduce exposure to the allergy trigger.

Q: Is Asthma More Dangerous For Adults

A: Yes. The death rate for adult-onset asthma is substantially higher than the death rate for childhood asthma.

One reason may be that adults either ignore asthma symptoms or attribute them to being overweight, being out of shape or getting older.

Asthma symptoms can also mimic those of other illnesses, including:

Severe Asthma And Covid

Exercise Induced Asthma

In conclusion, it is now well-recognized that older age, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes are risk factors of poor COVID-19 outcome. What is not yet clear is whether chronic respiratory diseases like asthma are also to be included as risk factors. The many studies that have addressed this question show discrepant results and point towards numerous factors that may play a role in the susceptibility and severity of COVID 19 in asthma patients. These include the severity of asthma itself, the asthma phenotypes/endotypes, asthma medications and co-morbidities. The reported incidences of severe COVID-19 cases among asthma patients are not determined by patient-related factors alone. Moreover, local factors and the diagnostic methods to identify asthma and COVID-19 can play an important role .

What Do The Results Of Allergy Tests Mean

A reaction on an allergy skin or blood test must be compared with your experience and history.1,9 It is possible to react to something on the skin test that does not trigger symptoms in real life. It is also possible to have no reaction on the skin test to something that has caused allergy symptoms in the past.

There are some clues about how likely a true reaction is. New blood tests are able to quantify the level of IgE antibodies.5 The higher the level of IgE, the more likely you are to have a true reaction. Higher IgE levels also indicate more severe disease or symptoms. Likewise, a more severe reaction on the skin test suggests that a true allergy is more likely.9

If the test results do not match up with your history, you may need to do more sensitive allergy tests.5

How Are The Results Of Allergy Testing Used

One of the best ways to reduce your symptoms and need for medication is to avoid triggers. It can be costly or difficult to avoid certain allergens.4 Knowing which allergens trigger your asthma can help you to focus on the most important things to avoid.

Allergy shots may be a treatment option if there is a clear link between an allergen and symptoms.1 Allergy shots are most useful for grass, cats, dust mites, and ragweed allergies. They are less helpful for cockroach or mold allergies. Under-the-tongue allergy treatments were approved by the FDA in 2014 for some grass allergies as an alternative to shots.10

If allergy tests show that a year-round, airborne allergen triggers your asthma, you may be able to take a medication called omalizumab .11 Omalizumab blocks IgE, which reduces allergic symptoms and asthma attacks.

Biological Therapies And Covid

Although more data will need to be obtained in the future, the evidence currently available encourages the continuation of maintenance therapy and biologic treatment of patients with asthma in the context of this pandemic in non-infected individuals. A practical clinical algorithm has also recently been proposed on the use of biologicals for the treatment of allergic diseases in the context of COVID-19. Non-infected patients on biologicals for the treatment of asthma, AD, CRSwNP, or CSU should continue their biologicals targeting type-2 inflammation via self-application. In the case of an active SARS-CoV-2 infection and moderate-to-severe COVID-19, biological treatment needs to be stopped until clinical recovery and SARS-CoV-2 negativity are established. Thereafter, treatment with biologicals can be reinitiated . Furthermore, maintenance of add-on therapy and a constant assessment of disease control, apart from acute management, are required. A consensus-based ad hoc expert panel of allergy/immunology specialists from the USA and Canada recommends continuing administration of biologicals in patients with proven efficacy and converting the patient to a prefilled syringe for potential home administration if this is available, otherwise in-office application is possible with a plan to transition to home administration . Therefore, if available, it is recommended to prefer a formulation for self-application and to offer telemedical monitoring.

Which Children Are At Risk For Asthma

Mild asthma induced by cat or house dust mite allergy study

Certain factors raise the risk of asthma in children:

  • Being exposed to secondhand smoke when their mother is pregnant with them or when they are small children
  • Genetics and family history. Children are more likely to have asthma if one of their parents has it, especially if its the mother.
  • Race or ethnicity. Black and African Americans and Puerto Ricans are at higher risk of asthma than people of other races or ethnicities.
  • Having other medical conditions such as allergies and obesity
  • Often having viral respiratory infections as young children
  • Sex. In children, asthma is more common in boys. In teens, it is more common in girls.

Q: How Well Does Treatment Work For Adults With Asthma

Asthma can be more difficult to control in adults for several reasons:

  • Asthma medications can be less effective later in life, particularly for those who are obese.
  • Oral steroids can worsen glaucoma, cataracts and osteoporosis.
  • Being on beta-blockers for heart problems can increase the severity of asthma.
  • The lungs and chest walls are stiffer and the muscles supporting deep breathing are weaker in adults.

For these reasons, adults with asthma are at increased risk for flare-ups and even hospitalization.

Allergy Induced Asthma Treatment:

The identification of allergic elements and rectification airways inflammation are two parts of the treatment that doctors perform during medication procedure. You have to understand the nature of airflow obstruction in asthma that could be due to increased airway irritability, inflammation and swelling in bronchial tubes. Its treatment varies according to the allergens and allergic periods.

Bronchodilator inhaler as a short-term medication

Bronchodilator is one of the very first medications that doctors prescribe in most cases of asthma. Such inhaler provides quick relief to the patients and its effect remains up to 8 hours. One can easily carry this rescue inhaler as it is very small in size.

Anti-allergy drugsThe oral corticosteroids are available for both short-term and long-term treatment for allergy-induced asthma symptoms. These drugs can prevent the effects of molecules that are responsible for swelling in airways. They are available in pills as well as liquid form, but they dont work like anabolic steroids.

Anti-IgE therapyIt is one of the latest treatments provided to treat all sorts of allergic asthma. This therapy uses injection to insert drugs into the body on a regular basis. You can reduce this treatment gradually. Since its a bit costly, every patient doesnt take it.

What Is An Allergy

An allergy is the immune system‘s reaction when exposed to what is otherwise a harmless substance, such as plant pollen, mold, or animal hair, skin, or saliva. The immune system acts as a body defense, yet for people with allergies, the immune system treats these things, called allergens, as if they are harmful, causing a disruption to normal body functions. Allergens are what trigger a series of reactions by the immune system during an allergic reaction.

How Does Asthma Affect Pregnancy

Asthma affects 4 to 8 out of 100 pregnant women . If you keep your asthma under control, it probably wont cause any problems during your pregnancy.

If you dont control your asthma, you may be at risk for a serious health problem called preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a condition that can happen after the 20th week of pregnancy or right after pregnancy. Its when a pregnant woman has high blood pressure and signs that some of her organs, like her kidneys and liver, may not be working properly. Some of these signs include having protein in the urine, changes in vision and severe headache.

If you dont control your asthma, your baby may not get enough oxygen. He may be at higher risk for health problems like:

Babies who are born too small and too soon are more likely to have newborn health problems. They can have trouble breathing and lasting disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy.

Are There Special Programs For Monitoring Air Pollution

The EPA reports air pollution levels using the Air Quality Index . AQI reports the level of ozone and other air pollutants. When the AQI is 101 or higher, it is dangerous for people with asthma. You may have to change your activities and medicines. If you have asthma, your symptoms can worsen even when ozone levels are moderate .

Many local weather forecasts warn the public about high air pollution days. You can find this information anytime at AirNow.gov.

Throughout the United States, when air pollution is high, we have AirNow Action Days. These forecast high air pollution days with unhealthy air. During Action Days, people with asthma should limit their time outdoors, especially from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Stay in a well-ventilated, preferably air-conditioned, building. Most of all, do not exercise outdoors on Action Days.

Does Allergic Asthma Go Away

Tottori Allergy & Asthma

Some people think you can outgrow asthma, but this isnt really true. Asthma can cause airway remodeling, so even if your symptoms subside over time, you dont really outgrow it.

However, some people do outgrow certain allergies or rather their body doesnt have as strong of an allergic response. You may believe that your allergic asthma is going away, but think of it more like being in remission. Even after years without symptoms, an allergen exposure can trigger an allergic asthma attack.

Conversely, there is also increasing awareness that allergies and allergic asthma can develop in adulthood.

Actions For This Page

  • Asthma symptoms can be triggered by a range of things.
  • Allergic triggers include dust mites, pollen, animal dander and mould.
  • Non-allergy triggers include smoke, exercise, cold air and viruses.
  • Reducing exposure to substances that trigger allergies and asthma symptoms can help you to control your asthma.
  • Ask your doctor about how you can avoid or reduce exposure to triggers of your asthma symptoms.
  • Aim for a smoke-free environment, both for yourself and your children.
  • Ask your doctor to update your asthma action plan each year.

Protective Shielding Limiting Virus Exposure

Behavioral factors are likely to be important. Protective shielding for at-risk groups, including those with asthma, has been widely advocated by international guidelines. Reduced exposure to SARS-CoV-2 amongst patients with asthma may therefore be contributing to the low prevalence of asthma reported in hospitalized cohorts . Government policies to limit the spread of the pandemic have also led to reductions in air pollution, which increases the severity of virus-induced asthma exacerbations . Nationwide preventive measures for COVID-19 in Japan were associated with a sharp drop in hospitalizations for asthma as a secondary effect .
