The Test Can Save Money

Exercise & Fitness : How to Exercise With Asthma

A spirometry test generally costs less than $100. Not having the test can cost a lot more money. If the test shows that you do not have asthma, this can save you hundreds of dollars a month for asthma medicines. If you do not have the test and you have asthma, an emergency room visit for an asthma attack can cost thousands of dollars.

What Types Of Sports Are Best For People With Eib

Activities most likely to trigger EIB:

  • Sports or activities in cold/dry weather
  • Sports or activities that need constant activity

Activities least likely to trigger EIB:

  • Sports or activities that use short bursts of exercise
  • Walking or leisure biking
  • Swimming in a warm, humid environment

It is important to consult with your health care provider before beginning any exercise program. Pace yourself. With effective management, people with EIB can perform and excel in a variety of sports. Many Olympic athletes and professional athletes with EIB excel in their sports.

Pay Attention To Your Body

While its easy to zone out while running, its important to stay in tune with your body.

Make sure that youre familiar with the normal signs of exercising, such as:

  • flushed skin
  • sweating
  • feeling warm

You should also know the symptoms of an asthma attack, which arent normal during exercise. They may include:

  • coughing
  • breathing that doesnt slow down

Asthma Isnt An Excuse Not To Work Out

  • Warm up and cool down before exercising. This will help you lungs get acclimated to the air.
  • Avoid working out during cold weather. If you do, cover your mouth and nose.
  • Avoid working out when you have a cold or viral infection.
  • Always use your inhaler or prescribed medication before you work out.

You shouldnt use EIB as an excuse not to work out and get exercise. Its likely possible as long as you work with your doctor, find a regimen that works for you and take any medication as necessary, said EXPERT.;Dr. Navitha Ramesh is a pulmonologist at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. Exercise for asthma: Benefits, best types, and safety tips

To decide if you have EIA, a doctor will probably start by asking about your medical history. The doctor will also examine you. You might run on a treadmill for 6 to 8 minutes, run outside, or do the activity that caused your symptoms. Then, the doctor will look at how youre breathing.

Some people with EIA think theyre having breathing trouble because theyre not in shape. But someone whos winded from being out of shape will start breathing normally again soon after exercise stops. Someone with EIA may take up to an hour to recover.

Other Forms Of Exercise

Many other types of exercise can also help improve the function of the lungs without overstraining them. These include:

  • golf
  • using an elliptical machine
  • taking the stairs instead of the elevator

Other more strenuous exercises and activities are not necessarily bad for asthma, but it is best for each individual to talk to a doctor before deciding on the best exercise for them. The doctor can advise on the risks of specific sports, such as running, basketball, or soccer, and how to manage symptoms during these activities.

People who are new to exercising should avoid high-intensity activities, at least until they build up endurance. Running, jogging, or soccer can be too much for a person with asthma if they are not accustomed to exercising.

It is best to avoid exercising in cold, dry environments. The types of exercise that involve cold weather, such as ice hockey, skiing, and other winter sports, are more likely to cause asthma flare-ups.

It is also crucial to pay attention to the body during exercise. If a particular form of exercise is causing a flare, a person should stop doing the activity until their symptoms are under control.

According to the American Lung Association, a person can manage their asthma by taking the following six steps:

What Are Animal Allergens

Animals can be a big asthma trigger. The animal parts that can trigger asthma symptoms are dander , saliva , urine , and feathers.

If your pet is an asthma trigger for you, these tips might help:

  • Keep pets outside. At the very least, keep them out of your bedroom.
  • Have someone else wash and brush your pet every week.
  • Play with your pet, but try not to hug or kiss it.
  • Ask other people in your household to wash their hands after touching your pet.
  • If you have an animal that lives in a cage, keep it in a room that you dont spend time in. Someone other than you should clean the cage daily.
  • Consider getting cold-blooded pets, such as fish, which are OK for kids with asthma.

If you try all these things but still have lots of asthma flare-ups, you may need to find another home for your pet.

What Is Exercise Induced Asthma

If you cough, wheeze or feel out of breath during or after exercise, it may be more than exertion that is the cause. If you feel tingling in your extremities, dizziness, or like you are breathing through a straw, you may be experiencing Exercise Induced Asthma. Even if youve never had any breathing issues in the past, EIA may be causing you to slow down, drop out, and begin to wonder if exercise is all its cracked up to be.

Having Exercise Induced Asthma does not mean that you should stop exercising. On the contrary, exercise helps to strengthen your entire cardio pulmonary system, and proper treatment of the condition can help keep you active, whether you are an elite level swimmer, an age group runner, or a weekend warrior.

How To Care For Your Asthma While Exercising

To stay safe, make sure to follow these precautions while exercising with asthma:;

  • Stay out of the cold: While exercising, you want to avoid breathing in cool, dry air, which can narrow your airway and trigger your asthma. But if you have to be in a cold environment, you should adjust your breathing. “The nose warms, filters, and moistens air entering the airway, so you want to make sure you’re breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth while exercising,” says Lucas.;
  • Warm-up beforehand: Stretching and doing warm-up exercises before you workout can also help your airways adjust. “Warming up is important to prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms,” says Lucas.;
  • Use your inhaler: You should take two puffs of albuterol at least five to 15 minutes prior to engaging in physical activity, according to Lucas. This will help open up your airways.

If you experience an asthma attack while exercising, which may include shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, you can take albuterol to open the airway. If that is not an option, or if it does not work, Lucas says emergency services should be called to provide medical treatment.

Avoiding Nighttime Asthma And Improving Sleep

Changes Following Treatment Of Nocturnal Asthma Symptoms

In general, the change of anti-asthma treatment for the nocturnal symptoms was associated with some improvements in measures of respiration, sleep, and psychological function. Parental reports indicated clinical improvement in their childs asthma and measures of respiratory function were better. Similarly, both subjective and objective findings indicated that sleep had improved. Although parental reports on this aspect showed some inconsistencies , sleep studies showed a marked improvement in awakenings. Some aspects of cognitive function, mood, and behaviour also appeared to have recovered, compared with pretreatment levels.

On the basis of these findings, it is tempting to attribute direct and simple causal connections between nocturnal asthma, sleep, and daytime psychological function, but this would be to pre-empt the further research needed to clarify the nature of the relations involved, to identify mediating factors, and to explain the inconsistencies in present reports.

In conjunction with pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing, use these breathing positions to help you reduce shortness of breath.

These positions are helpful when you have shortness of breath during activity, emotional excitement, exposure to adverse weather conditions or when you feel tense and need to relax.

What Is Obese Asthma

Newer research has established what’s being called obese asthma, a condition that appears to have distinct characteristics that separate it from asthma in non-obese people, and even from some cases of asthma in people with obesity.

A major finding is that the inflammation that leads to narrowed airways appears to come from a different mechanism. While those with obese asthma tend to have reduced lung capacity, experience more severe symptoms, and be more treatment-resistant, they also tend to no longer have asthma after losing weight.

Ruling Out Other Possibilities

You may be tested again after using a bronchodilator like an albuterol inhaler. If the inhaler doesnt improve symptoms, you might have exercise-induced vocal cord dysfunction instead of EIB. Vocal cord dysfunction symptoms will also stop as soon as exercise is stopped.

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness can also mimic EIB when the airways overreact to inhaling allergens or airborne irritants, causing cough and phlegm production.

There are a number of prescription medications that can help control exercise-induced asthma. Heres your cheat sheet for medication options.

How Can I Deal With Exercise

How to reduce exercise-induced bronchoconstriction or asthma

When it comes to EIA, staying one step ahead of your symptoms is a good strategy. Ask your doctor what you should do before exercising or playing sports.

Here are some of the things doctors suggest for people who have EIA:

  • Warm up carefully before any exercise to prevent chest tightening.
  • If you do pretreatment, take your;medicine as close to the start of exercise as possible.
  • Breathe through your nose during exercise.
  • Take brief rests during exercise and use quick-relief medicine as prescribed if symptoms start.
  • Cool down after exercise.
  • Avoid exercising outside during really cold weather. But if you have to, wear a scarf around your nose and mouth or a ski mask.
  • If pollen or pollution trigger your asthma, exercise indoors on days when the air quality is bad or the pollen count is high.
  • Dont exercise when you have a cold or the flu.
  • Dont exercise if youre having asthma symptoms.

Taking medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes is the most important tip of all. Skipping long-term control medicine, if its prescribed for you, can make symptoms worse. Forgetting to take medicine before exercise can lead to severe flare-ups and even ER visits.

Finally, always keep your inhaler with you when exercising. You may feel shy about your asthma, but dont hide it from coaches or teammates they can help you. Coaches especially should know about your asthma so they will understand if you need to take a break and use your medicine.
