How To Treat Cough Variant Asthma

What Is Cough Variant Asthma

Tips To Cure Symptoms of Asthma & Remedies For Cough Variant Asthma

Cough variant asthma is a form of asthma characterized by an unproductive dry cough. The patient does not experience the classic wheezing and whistling breath sounds associated with asthma, which can be confusing for people who are diagnosed with this condition as they may think that it is not possible to have asthma without wheezing. The lack of wheezing also makes cough variant asthma challenging to diagnose, as it cannot be diagnosed simply by listening to a patient’s lungs.

Some signs that someone has cough variant asthma include a dry cough which persists for at least six weeks, along with things like color changes after coughing fits. Patients typically cough more at night, and the coughing may become so disruptive that the patient has trouble sleeping or is kept awake by the coughing. The cough is also not productive. The patient does not bring up mucus, and often does not feel better after coughing, indicating that the patient is not coughing in an attempt to clear the airway.

Part 3 Of 3: Taking Medications

  • 1Create an action plan with your doctor. Your doctor will work with you to create a written plan that you can follow when you start having an asthma attack or coughing fit. The action plan should give you a list of steps to follow to get your breathing back to normal. It should also list emergency and medical contacts.XTrustworthy SourceAmerican Lung AssociationNonprofit health organization dedicated to improving lung health through education, advocacy, and researchGo to source
  • The doctor will explain how the action plan moves from green to yellow to red. Each colored section should list symptoms you should look for, your medication and treatments, and a place for you to record your lung function.
  • 2Control your asthma with short-term medication. If you’re having a coughing attack, you’ll probably be advised to use an inhaler. Your inhaler is designed to quickly get medication into your airways so they open.XExpert Source
  • Have A Warm Glass Of Turmeric Milk

Turmeric can also be used to treat CVA. It has a therapeutic effect on coughs, mainly dry coughs. It also reduces inflammation in the airways, which aids the healing process. Owing to its antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric has been proven to be effective for the treatment of bronchial asthma as well.

Its immune-boosting property also helps your body fight infections.

    • Drink a glass of warm milk mixed with ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder twice a day.
    • Roast turmeric root and grind it into a smooth powder. Mix 1 tablespoon of raw honey and ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder. Take this twice daily until your condition improves.
    • Another option is to drink a glass of warm milk mixed with ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder twice a day.

Difference Between Asthma And Cough Variant Asthma

The main difference between asthma and cough variant asthma is the absence of symptoms like wheezing, a constricted feeling in the chest, dyspnoea , and shortness of breath in the case of CVA. These are the classic symptoms of asthma, while cough variant asthma is characterized mainly by a dry cough.

Causes And Complications Of Cough Variant Asthma

Natural Ways to Manage Cough Variant Asthma at Home

Cough variant asthma is pretty specific and is easily noticeable in young children. Much like classic asthma, the true causes of cough variant asthma are currently unknown; however, it does seem to appear during upper respiratory infections, following contact with allergens, and among those who have started taking beta blockers .

The cough will essentially have the same characteristics as traditional asthma, in that the breathing tubes will react to irritation by spasming, or squeezing into a smaller size.;The cough will also be nonproductive, producing no phlegm or mucus.

Kids with cough variant asthma may have a cough caused by the common cold, acute bronchitis , or another upper respiratory infection that doesnt seem to go away. This cough will continue long after the initial virus has disappearedfor at least four weeks in children and eight weeks in adults. Cough medicine will also not work on this cough. And if untreated, cough variant asthma can come with some complications including sleep disruption, hoarseness and sore throat, and headaches.

Risk factors that can increase your chances of getting cough variant asthma include:

    • Having allergies
    • Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke
    • Exposure to environmental irritants
    • Having asthma or a family history of asthma

If you think you may be suffering from cough variant asthma, the next step is to get it diagnosed.

    What Is An Asthma Cough

An asthma cough is commonly known as cough variant asthma. In fact, it surprises many people to learn that cough variant asthma is also a type of asthma which is only marked by the presence of a dry and nonproductive cough. Most types of asthma have the patient suffering from some kind of breathing problem, typically shortness of breath and wheezing. However, in an asthma cough, the individual presents with no traditional asthma symptoms and therefore, this condition often fails to be diagnosed correctly.

In spite of the fact that an asthma cough does not have any of the traditional asthma symptoms, it does have an impact on the body. This includes:

    • An asthma cough increases your risk of catching other allergic conditions
    • It increases the bodys sensitivity to allergens, particularly the sensitivity of the airways
    • An asthma cough can cause swelling and narrowing of the airways, thus causing disruption in air flow

Cough variant asthma is often also known as a chronic cough because doctors use this term to refer to a cough that lasts for over 6 to 8 weeks. If you have an asthma cough, you will be coughing either during the day or during the night. In particular, nighttime asthma cough is considered to be worse, as it often causes disturbed sleep. Asthma a cough also becomes worse with exercise. This condition is then referred to as exercise-induced asthma. Dust, strong perfumes, cold air, or any allergy-triggering factors can increase asthma coughing.

    What Causes An Asthma Cough

    Does this child get asthma

The most well known symptoms of asthma are wheezing and feeling breathless, but a cough is also very common particularly if you suffer from cough-variant asthma.

People who have asthma may cough for two reasons. Firstly, the lungs produce more phlegm when the airways become irritated. The coughing helps to bring some of this phlegm up and thereby clear the airways.

However, an asthma cough can also simply be a response to the irritation of the airways. For most people with asthma, the coughing is worst at night, which can make it difficult to sleep and cause ongoing fatigue in the daylight hours. The cough is also normally accompanied by high-pitched wheezing, which indicates the narrowing of the airways.

Measurements Of Ios And Pulmonary Function

IOS measurements were obtained using a commercially available IO device according to the manufacturers recommendations . The following values were obtained: resistance at 5Hz ; resistance at 20Hz ; the difference between R5 and R20 ; reactance at 5Hz ; resonant frequency ; and integrated area of low-frequency X values . Fres and AX are values that detect expiratory flow limitations.

After the IOS measurements, the MasterScreen IOS-Jaeger device was used to perform spirometry. To avoid any negative effects of forced expiration on the airway, spirometry was never performed before the IOS measurements. The percent predicted forced vital capacity , the percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1s , the FEV1/FVC ratio, the percent predicted the maximal mid-expiratory flow , and the percent predicted peak expiratory flow were obtained.

Equations reported by Vogel et al., given below, were used to calculate the predicted values of the IOS resistances: woman R;=×0.1 , men R;=×0.1 . Patients with diagnosed clinical CVA were divided into three groups as follows: the central type was defined as 100% of predicted R20 and<100% predicted R5-R20. The peripheral type was defined as <100% of predicted R20 and100% of predicted R5-R20. The resistless type was defined as <100% of predicted R20 and<100% predicted R5-R20.

    How Is It Treated

Treatment for cough-variant asthma follows the steps for long-term asthma management.

The first line of treatment for cough-variant is usually inhaled corticosteroids.1,5 If the cough improves with this medication, the diagnosis of cough-variant asthma is confirmed.5 Additionally, medications that open up the airways may be added if needed.4

How Is Cough Variant Asthma Diagnosed

It can be challenging to get a proper diagnosis because a cough is sometimes the only symptom. Whats more, many conditions could cause a cough, such as bronchitis or a postnasal drip.

The onset and duration of a cough can also be hard to pinpoint, which often causes doctors to look at other possible causes like acid reflux first.

    Your doctor may ask a series of questions, give you a physical exam, and run a few tests. A chest x-ray and a spirometry test may help rule out any other conditions.;

What is a spirometry test? Spirometry is a test that assesses lung function. It measures how much air you inhale and how much and how quickly you exhale. Medical professionals diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , and other respiratory conditions with a spirometry test.

If your symptoms and test results dont indicate asthma, the next step is a methacholine challenge test.

Methacholine is an asthma trigger. In other words, methacholine causes airways to constrict. Someone with asthma will experience symptoms at a much lower dose than someone without asthma.

First, youll do a spirometry test to establish lung function. Then, youll inhale methacholine aerosol before another spirometry test. A bronchodilator will reverse the effects and open the airways afterward.

    The test is positive for asthma if lung function drops by 20% or more.;
