How to Treat an Asthma Attack – First Aid Training – St John Ambulance

For many people who suffer from asthma, an asthma attack no inhaler situation can be an instant reason to panic. Although the asthma inhalers side effects can be uncomfortable or even dangerous, many people rely on these medications to help them breathe when an asthma attack occurs. Without an inhaler you should know which steps you can take to stop the attack and get your breathing under control. In some cases understanding these tips could save your life if you end up in this situation.

For an asthma attack no inhaler there are a number of things that may help. Breathing exercises for asthma may be learned which limit the inflammation that occurs by minimizing irritation to the airways. Breathing out slowly through your mouth will help calm and relax you some, so that anxiety does not make the problem worse or cause any further constrictions. Continue breathing in this way until the attack starts to subside.

Another possible way to deal with an asthma attack no inhaler situation is to use either an over the counter asthma attack treatment or some strong coffee, if either is available. OTC remedies for asthma contain either ephedrine or adrenaline, and may work in some cases. These drugs are strong though, and can be dangerous. Drinking strong coffee may also help, because the caffeine has a stimulant effect that helps open the airways and relieve difficult breathing.

When To Seek Medical Help:

Asthma is a serious condition and must be treated by a medical professional. Do not try to self-medicate. In case of a severe asthma attack, make sure to follow the following steps:

  • Use your rescue inhaler. It has fast-acting medicines and is different from a daily use regular maintenance inhaler.
  • If you do not have the rescue inhaler, call for help or visit the nearest emergency department in a hospital.1

You should look out for the following signs and should seek immediate emergency medical care

  • If you are panicking or anxious
  • If you have chest pressure or pain
  • If you are continuously coughing
  • If you are wheezing while breathing is severe
  • If you have difficulty talking
  • If you are pale and sweaty excessively
  • If your breathing is very rapid and shallow
  • If your fingernails and skin become bluish or lips and gums become grey or whitish .1

You must not rely on home remedies alone for the treatment of condition and should consult a qualified doctor for any advice for condition if the symptoms do not improve with home remedies.

What To Do For Asthma Attacks When You Dont Have An Inhaler

Here are some home remedies to manage an asthma attack without an inhaler.

Sit upright

Sitting up straight helps to open up your airways. Bending or lying down can constrict your airways even further and worsen your asthma symptoms.

Practice deep breathing

Take long, slow, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Try to prevent hyperventilation with short, fast breaths. Learn some breathing exercises. These exercises can make breathing easier and help reduce breath tightness and other asthma symptoms. Examples include pursed lips breathing, belly breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and yoga breathing.

Try to stay calm

Anxiety can cause chest tightness and make it even harder for you to breathe. Try to remain as calm as possible during an asthma attack. Of course, this is easier said than done when youre gasping for air. It may help to play some music or distract yourself by watching TV while waiting for the asthma attack to subside or for medical help to arrive.

Remove yourself from asthma triggers

Common triggers of asthma attacks include pet dander, cigarette smoke, air pollution, and cold weather. These triggers can not only cause an asthma attack but also make your symptoms worse. If possible, avoid triggers and remove yourself from a trigger when youre having an attack. Move to an area with clean air, preferably an air-conditioned environment, during an asthma attack.

How Do I Know If My Cough Is Heart Related

If your cough is accompanied by weakness and shortness of breath, you may have heart failure. If you experience shortness of breath, persistent cough, and chest pain, you should see your doctor immediately. Symptoms may also include a dry, hacking cough and loss of appetite. Coughing can occur even when you are at rest. If your cough persists and gets worse at night, contact your doctor.

If the mucus is white or bloody, its likely you have a heart problem. This type of heart failure occurs when the heart cannot keep up with the demand for blood. If the heart cant pump blood to the body, it backs up in the pulmonary veins and causes a cough. It may also lead to bloating and make it more difficult for your kidneys to eliminate extra sodium and water.

Other causes of chest pain include pulmonary embolism. This condition results from a blood clot blocking blood flow to the lungs. Often, these blood clots are the result of a condition called deep vein thrombosis, which begins in the legs. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism include shortness of breath, breathing difficulty, and coughing that may contain blood.

A Lot Of Studies Have Concluded That The Best Part About Acupuncture Therapy Is That There Are Very Few Safety Concerns Attached To Its Practice

In India, nearly 93 million people suffer from chronic respiratory conditions, out of which 37 million people are asthmatics. Asthma is characterised by bronchial hyper-responsiveness along with chronic airway inflammation, accompanied by chest tightness, episodic wheezing, breathlessness, and cough. Asthma is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, ranking among the top 20 conditions leading to disability globally.

Apart from affecting the quality of life, asthma can lead to severe disability and even bring a heavy financial burden to patients, their families, and society. While pharmacotherapies like long-acting beta-agonists and daily inhaled corticosteroids are widely recommended to prevent any serious exacerbation and keep the symptoms under control, long-term pharmacological treatment can inevitably cause potential side effects, like adrenal suppression, liver toxicity, reduced bone mineral density, and increased risk of death.

How Parents Can Help Their Kids With Asthma Avoid Serious Attacks

DALLAS Oct. 11, 2022 Changes in weather that accompany the return to school each fall can create a challenging environment for children who suffer from asthma, the most common pediatric chronic illness.

Tanya Martinez-Fernandez, M.D., Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern who specializes in pulmonology and sleep medicine, recommends a number of steps parents can take to reduce the risk of their kids having serious asthma attacks.

Asthma causes inflammation in the lungs, coughing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and wheezing, and can be life-threatening if not effectively managed. Nearly 7% of Texas children and more than 6 million kids in the U.S. have asthma.

Dr. Martinez-Fernandez said asthma attacks and ER visits typically increase in September, when viral illnesses, allergies, and environmental factors put youngsters at elevated risk. She offered the following tips for parents:

UT Southwestern and Childrens Health have North Texas only academic-affiliated severe asthma program for children from birth to 18.

Our Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy physicians, as well as our advanced practice providers, have in-depth knowledge of evaluating and treating children with asthma and allergies, Dr. Martinez-Fernandez said. Know The 4 Steps Of Asthma First Aid

Its important for everyone in the community to know the 4 steps of asthma first aid.

One of the most common reliever medications in Australia is salbutamol, often known as your blue puffer. These are available over the counter from a chemist.

If you are not sure if someone is having an asthma attack, you can still use blue reliever medication because it is unlikely to cause harm.Call triple zero immediately if:

    • the person is not breathing
    • their asthma suddenly becomes worse or is not improving
    • the person is having an asthma attack and theres no reliever medication available
    • the person is unsure if it is asthma
    • the person is known to have anaphylaxis. If this is the case, ALWAYS GIVE ADRENALINE AUTOINJECTOR FIRST, and then reliever, even if there are no skin symptoms.

    Other Asthma First Aid Directions

Not everyone with asthma uses the same reliever medication.

Some people use a different blue reliever called Bricanyl which comes in a different type of inhaler called a Turbuhaler.

See the asthma first aid steps for those using Bricanyl.

Other people use a dual-purpose reliever. A dual-purpose reliever contains budesonide and formoterol together, and is used as-needed.

The combination of budesonide and formoterol in the dual-purpose reliever, when used as-needed, relieves symptoms and reduces risk of experiencing serious asthma flare-ups. It does this by relaxing tight airway muscles and treating inflammation in the airways.

Note: you may also be prescribed these medicines as a preventer. Always follow your doctors instructions on your asthma action plan about what to use in an asthma flare-up or asthma attack.
