Being Prepared For An Asthma Emergency

An asthma attack can range from mild to severe. A severe attack, also called an exacerbation, can be a medical emergency. Having an asthma action plan is the key to recognizing and managing an asthma emergency.

Work with your doctor to come up with an asthma action plan. This plan shows when you are in the green zone , yellow zone or red zone . Your plan will also list instructions for what to do in each situation.

Part of your plan will probably include using a rescue inhaler containing a short-acting beta agonist or nebulizer to open up your lungs during an attack. You may also be taught to use a handheld device, called a peak flow meter. To use a peak flow meter, you blow a single breath into the mouthpiece as fast as you can. This measures how well you can push out air from your lungs and can indicate how severe your asthma is.

Dupixent For Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps

Dupixent is approved to treat chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults. Its used when the condition is not well controlled by other treatments.

Dupixent is used as an add-on treatment in people with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps who are already taking another medication to treat it. Rhinosinusitis is when your sinus cavities swell and cause pain or pressure in your face, along with congestion. Rhinosinusitis becomes chronic when it lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Nasal polyps are tissue growths in the nose that are noncancerous. People with chronic rhinosinusitis usually have an increased number of eosinophil cells in their nasal and sinus cavities. Eosinophils are immune system cells that increase swelling in the area.

Dupixent helps by reducing swelling in the area, which relieves symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

In clinical trials, Dupixent greatly decreased nasal and sinus symptoms caused by chronic rhinosinusitis. It also helped improve peoples sense of smell. Reduced ability to smell is a common side effect of nasal polyps.

After 24 weeks, people taking Dupixent experienced a 51% to 59% decrease in nasal congestion. In comparison, people taking a placebo experienced a 16% to 18% decrease in nasal congestion.

Shortly after starting treatment with Dupixent, Oryanna called me up and said, I can smell! Dr. Dass said. It was the biggest deal in the world for her. Her asthma symptoms are also more under control than they have been for a long time.

Oryannas nasal polyps reduced in size and she has not needed another surgery to remove her nasal polyps since starting Dupixent. Dupixent is the;first FDA-approved biologic shown to shrink nasal polyp size and improve the signs and symptoms of the associated CRSwNP.

The benefits and risks of Dupixent in moderate to severe asthma patients were evaluated in 3 clinical studies with 2,888 patients which showed up to 81% fewer asthma attacks. In separate studies of CRSwNP patients, Dupixent was clinically proven to significantly reduce nasal congestion and shrink nasal polyps when added to other nasal polyps medicines.

When you suffer from , your airways narrow and swell and can even produce extra mucus, all of which make breathing difficult. Asthma can also cause lots of wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

But what if you have an asthma attack while you dont have your inhaler with you? This can be a dangerous situation, but at Sulkowski Family Medicine, weve learned a few tips over the years that can help you out. Heres what we recommend:

Can Using Dupixent Increase Your Risk For Cancer

No, thats not likely. Studies havent found any increased risk of cancer in people who receive Dupixent.

There is an increased risk of cancer with certain immunosuppressant medications used to treat severe eczema or asthma. Immunosuppressants weaken your immune system, which is your bodys defense against disease. These medications can reduce your bodys ability to find and kill cancerous cells.

But Dupixent doesnt weaken your entire immune system. It only affects a couple of immune system proteins. So its unlikely to affect your bodys ability to find and destroy cancerous cells.

A little over a year later, I am currently on my 11th round of withdrawals from Dupixent. The longest I have gone without the drug was 8 weeks . I still get the cold sores and the rashes, but later on in the withdrawal process – between the 5th and 8th-week mark. I am very fortunate that every time I inject myself, the drug takes about 3 days for it to kick in and then the round of withdrawal begins again.

For me, comfort food is a big deal. For years there were foods that I love that I couldnt or wouldnt eat because I wasnt able to smell anything it was so frustrating, Oryanna recalls.

The path to finding a treatment option that relieved her symptoms was not an easy one for Oryanna. Her doctors prescribed oral corticosteroids and she had multiple surgeries to help remove the;nasal polyps but they kept coming back.

How Does Dupixent Work And Whats Its Half

Eczema, asthma, and chronic sinusitis are all worsened by inflammation . Dupixent helps to reduce symptoms of these conditions by reducing inflammation.

Specifically, Dupixents mechanism of action is to block certain proteins from binding to their receptors in your immune system. These proteins are called interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 .

Normally, when IL-4 and IL-13 bind to their receptors, your immune system releases cytokines. And this release of cytokines leads to inflammation.

The exact half-life of Dupixent isnt known. But it takes about 3 months for Dupixent to be fully cleared from your system.
