What Does Epinephrine Do
Epinephrine has different effects on different parts of the body including:
- Heart it causes the heart to pump faster and harder. This raises your blood pressure and circulates blood more quickly throughout the body.
- Lungs and airways your breathing becomes deeper and faster. It dilates the airways and may reduce swelling.
- Eyes it causes the pupils in your eyes to dilate.

You and your doctor need to create an asthma action plan that details what to do when you are in different zones — green, yellow, or red:
- Green zone: You are free of symptoms and can do your usual activities. Peak flow readings are 80% to 100% of your personal best. You’re doing well. If you use daily control medicine, you should take it as usual.
- Yellow zone: You have symptoms of asthma. Or your peak flow readings are between 50% and 80% of your personal best. Your asthma is worsening. You may need medicine to prevent a more serious asthma attack.
- Red zone: You have symptoms of an asthma emergency. Peak flow readings are 50% or lower of your personal best. You are having a severe attack and need asthma emergency treatment.
Most important, your written asthma action plan spells out what you should do in an asthma emergency.
Since every person’s asthma is different, you need to have a custom-tailored asthma emergency treatment plan.
Your plan might include the following steps:
- Use your emergency inhaler as prescribed.
- Take a peak flow reading if you can.
- Get to an emergency room or call 911.
Don’t delay. Waiting too long to get asthma emergency treatment can be deadly.
An asthma action plan should also include:
- The name and number of your family doctor
- The name and number of your local hospital
- Your personal best peak flow meter reading
- A list of your asthma triggers
- A list of asthma symptoms
- The names and doses of your medications

How To Use A Generic Epinephrine Auto
Generic epinephrine auto-injectors are available. They may have slightly different instructions, so it is important to review the instructions on your auto-injector. In general, the process is very similar to most brand auto-injectors:
- Take off the cap.
- Press the tip firmly on the thigh at a perpendicular angle.
- Swing and push the auto-injector firmly until you hear a click.
- Hold firmly for 10 seconds.
- Remove the auto-injector.

Epinephrine is commonly used by paramedics in a range of clinical scenarios. Its role in cardiac arrest scenarios is well established, but the indications for use in acute severe or life-threatening asthma are less well defined. This article reviews the evidence for the use of epinephrine in acute severe asthma and uses a case study to highlight some of the potential side-effects that clinicians need to be aware of.
Epinephrine is a catecholamine produced by the adrenal glands and has actions on nearly all cell types in its role as a hormone and neurotransmitter. Epinephrine acts upon p1 and p2 adrenergic receptors. It produces the fight or flight response namely, increased cardiac output and bronchodilation .
In lower doses, the p receptors are stimulated preferentially resulting in smooth muscle relaxation, peripheral vasodilatation and hypotension. Higher doses result in stimulation of peripheral alpha-receptors resulting in an increase in peripheral vascular resistance and elevation of blood pressure .
It was first artificially synthesized in 1904 by Friedrich Stolz and since that time has become a key tool in managing critically unwell patients. Its role in a diverse range of conditions is well documented, from respiratory problems such as croup and anaphylaxis to cardiac arrest victims .
Does Epinephrine Increase Heart Rate
Epinephrine raises the heart rate temporarily. The effects will only last until the medication wears off.
Again, people diagnosed with heart disease should talk with their doctor about the potential impact epinephrine may have on their condition. Epinephrine should still be given to treat life-threatening allergic reactions the benefits far outweigh the risks.

The benefits of epinephrine in treating life-threatening symptoms far outweigh the risks, even concerning other medical conditions.

How Should I Use Epinephrine Inhalation
Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.
Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.
Before using this medicine for the first time, shake the inhaler and prime it with 4 test sprays into the air, away from your face.
Also shake the inhaler just before each use and prime it with 1 spray.
Each dose is 1 to 2 inhalations. After the first inhalation, wait 1 minute. Then use a second inhalation if your symptoms have not improved.
Wait at least 4 hours between doses. Do not use more than 8 inhalations in 24 hours.
Seek medical attention if your breathing problems do not improve after 20 minutes, or if they get worse quickly.
Tell your doctor if you have more than 2 asthma attacks in 1 week.
Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep away from open flame or high heat. The canister may explode if it gets too hot. Do not puncture or burn an empty inhaler canister.
Wash the inhaler after each day of use by running water through the mouthpiece for 30 seconds.

Is There A General Epinephrine Dose For Anaphylaxis
For adultsexperiencing severe symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction, the standard dose for treatment is 0.3-0.5 mg via intramuscular injection. This may be repeated every 5-10 minutes as needed.
For children experiencing severe symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction, the standard dose is 0.15 mg to 0.3 mg via intramuscular injection. This may be repeated every 5-10 minutes as needed.
For very young children, the epinephrine brand AUVI-Q® has a dosage of 0.10 mg . Talk with your childs doctor about this option.
Hospitals and emergency departments use vials and syringes to administer epinephrine. When prescribing epinephrine, hospital and emergency room staff will provide a specific dosage based on the patients body weight.
Signs That You Need To Use Asthma First Aid
If you are experiencing any of the following signs, follow your asthma action plan. If you do not have an asthma action plan, or you are assisting someone who is experiencing an asthma attack, start asthma first aid. Do not wait until asthma is severe.
Mild to moderate asthma signs :
- able to talk in full sentences
- able to walk or move around
- may have a cough or wheeze.
Severe asthma signs :
- cannot speak a full sentence in one breath
- tugging of the skin between ribs or at base of neck
- may have cough or wheeze
- reliever medication not lasting as long as usual.
Life-threatening asthma signs :
- getting little or no relief from reliever inhaler
- may no longer have wheeze or cough.
In asthma emergencies, follow your asthma action plan.
