Montelukast comes as a tablet, a chewable tablet, and granules to take by mouth. Montelukast is usually taken once a day with or without food. When montelukast is used to treat asthma, it should be taken in the evening. When montelukast is used to prevent breathing difficulties during exercise, it should be taken at least 2 hours before exercise. If you are taking montelukast once a day on a regular basis, or if you have taken a dose of montelukast within the past 24 hours, you should not take an additional dose before exercising. When montelukast is used to treat allergic rhinitis, it may be taken at any time of day. Take montelukast at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take montelukast exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Do not use montelukast to treat a sudden attack of asthma symptoms. Your doctor will prescribe a short-acting inhaler to use during attacks. Talk to your doctor about how to treat symptoms of a sudden asthma attack. If your asthma symptoms get worse or if you have asthma attacks more often, be sure to call your doctor.

Montelukast controls the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis but does not cure these conditions. Continue to take montelukast even if you feel well. Do not stop taking montelukast without talking to your doctor.

Enrollment Procedures And Study Setting

Following enrollment, two women and two men were excluded from the analysis for no-show at the follow-up visit. The final study population included 10 males between 23 and 43 years old and 11 age-matched females among the participants, there were two mild smokers with a smoking history of 8.2 + 2.9 pack/years. No woman was taking oral or intrauterine contraceptives. Obesity, defined as a body mass index 30 kg/m2, was present in two females . At the moment of the enrollment, all the subjects were treated using the Step 2 approach recommended by Consensus-based Asthma Symptom Control : regular low dose of ICS plus as-needed short acting beta2-agonists . Since the asthma was non- or partially controlled based upon daytime asthma symptoms, night waking due to asthma, as-needed use of SABA, activity limitation due to the symptoms, a step-up approach was required at baseline visit. According to the Step 3 approach, the subjects were switched to a low-dose maintenance therapy with ICS + MS , plus as-needed SABA or low-dose ICS/LABA.

Baseline and End of Study Visits

At enrollment, prior to the MS addition to ICS therapy, the values for FEV1.0, FVC, fraction of FeNO, and eosinophils levels were recorded, together with the results of the asthma control test . Patients were seen by their assigned physician in an outpatient setting at enrollment and 13 weeks after the enrollment.

What Is Singulair How Does It Work

Singulair, or montelukast, is a leukotriene receptor antagonist .

Leukotrienes are released by the immune system in response to allergens, such as pollen, and promote inflammation, bronchoconstriction , breathing difficulties, and other allergy symptoms.

The active ingredient, montelukast, in leukotriene receptor antagonists like Singulair binds to these receptors and opposes their function.

Singulair is usually used to prevent asthma attacks and treat seasonal allergies. Singulair isnt effective for acute asthma attacks or sudden, extreme allergic reactions. Instead, its commonly used long-term for maintenance purposes and is usually safe for extended, regular use.

After 13 weeks of add-on therapy with MS, we observed a marked improvement in ACT score compared with the baseline one. The ACT score was significantly higher in women than men . Asthmatic women treated with MS + ICS showed a better control of symptoms compared with men treated with the same dose and therapeutic approach . The higher effectiveness of MS + ICS in women vs. men is highlighted by the Delta Percentage , which confirms the achievement of a better control of symptoms in women respect to men .

Can Montelukast Cause Problems

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains the most common ones associated with montelukast. You will find a full list in the manufacturer’s information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

Common montelukast side-effects What can I do if I experience this?
Tummy pain, feeling sick , diarrhoea Speak with your doctor if this continues
Headache Drink plenty of water and ask your pharmacist to recommend a suitable painkiller. If the headaches continue, let your doctor know
Throat and chest infections, high temperature , skin rash If troublesome, speak with your doctor

Important: if you get any of the following symptoms, please let your doctor know straightaway. These can be a sign of a very rare but serious disorder called Churg-Strauss syndrome: flu-like symptoms, tingling feelings or numbness in your arms or legs, difficulties with breathing, and skin rash.

Taking montelukast can sometimes affect your mood or behaviour, such as causing nightmares or other sleeping problems, anxiety, depression, agitation, irritability or restlessness. If you think you are being affected in this way, speak to your doctor for advice.

Safety Profile Of Montelukast

Montelukast Zykast Singulair As Potential COVID-19 Therapy, NY Doctors Suggest

The safety profile of montelukast has been well evaluated in the many long-term studies on large groups of adult and paediatric patients, and no significant or considerable side effects have been reported . A recent review on more than 2700 children and adolescents concluded that the clinical and laboratory safety profile for montelukast was similar to that observed for placebo or active control/usual care therapies, and that the safety profile of montelukast did not change with long-term use .

Since the beginning of the use of montelukast, several case reports on the occurrence of a Churg-Strauss syndrome have been reported. These cases have been considered as being due to the loss of some masking effect of high-dose ICS or oral corticosteroids, which were reduced after the addition of montelukast, with subsequent manifestation of full clinical features of the systemic vasculitis. A report on a large number of patients with CSS has been described in a recent paper, showing that montelukast use was associated with a 4.5-fold risk of CSS onset within 3 months, although this effect might be confounded by the escalation in asthma therapy before CSS onset .

More recently, some concern was raised regarding the possibility of greater suicide rate in patients taking montelukast, but the revision of 116 clinical studies showed that the frequency of behaviour-related adverse experience and suicides in patients treated with montelukast was no different from control groups .

People may also experience heartburn or indigestion, vomiting, hepatitis, bruising, and/or skin reactions. In some cases, people may have pain in their joints or muscles, muscle cramps, tiredness, and swelling, and in children, bed-wetting may occur.

If you experience any adverse effects while taking Singulair, its important to talk to your healthcare provider. People who have asthma and experience worsening symptoms when they take aspirin should avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking Singulair.

People who are allergic to aspirin or have a condition called phenylketonuria should talk to their healthcare providers to get medical advice about the possible pros and cons of taking Singulair. Tell your provider about any other medical conditions you may have. Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should also discuss using Singulair with their healthcare provider. Lastly, while there is little risk to the baby if you are breastfeeding, know that Singulair is present in breast milk. Discuss this with your healthcare provider.
