Who Can Get Asthma

Anyone can develop asthma at any age. People with allergies or people exposed to tobacco smoke and secondhand smoke are more likely to develop asthma.

Statistics show women tend to have asthma more than men, and asthma affects Black Americans more frequently than other races.

When a child develops asthma, healthcare providers call it childhood asthma. If it develops later in life, its adult-onset asthma.

Children do not outgrow asthma. They may have fewer symptoms as they get older, but they could still have an asthma attack. Your childs healthcare provider can help you understand the risks.

Personal Asthma Action Plan

As part of your initial assessment, you should be encouraged to draw up a personal asthma action plan with your GP or asthma nurse.

If you’ve been admitted to hospital because of an asthma attack, you should be offered an action plan before you go home.

The action plan should include information about your asthma medicines, and will help you recognise when your symptoms are getting worse and what steps to take. You should also be given information about what to do if you have an asthma attack.

Your personal asthma action plan should be reviewed with your GP or asthma nurse at least once a year, or more frequently if your symptoms are severe.

As part of your asthma plan, you may be given a peak flow meter. This will give you another way of monitoring your asthma, rather than relying only on symptoms, so you can recognise deterioration earlier and take appropriate steps.

Why Asthma Makes You Cough

When is a cough more than just an annoying tickle in your throat? If you have a cough that won’t go away, you may have asthma. A chronic cough is one of the symptoms of asthma. For some people, a cough may be their only asthma symptom. Asthma medications can relieve your nagging cough and keep you feeling good.

What Are The Symptoms Of An Asthma Cough

Asthma symptoms: The four signs youve developed the ...

Cough variant asthma or an asthma cough is usually known to have no other symptom apart from a chronic dry and nonproductive cough. A nonproductive cough means that it does not produce any mucus. Lasting for more than 8 to 10 weeks in adults and more than 5 weeks in children, an asthma cough is not considered to be a serious condition on its own. However, a chronic cough is irritating and disrupts your daily life.

Sometimes, to understand whether or not your cough is happening due to asthma, doctors may assess if you have any of these related symptoms:

Keep in mind that it is necessary to treat an asthma cough properly and in time because if it is left untreated and ignored, then it may progress into regular asthma. If you notice the following symptoms, your asthma cough might well be developing into classic asthma:

  • Tightness feeling in the chest
  • Difficulty in breathing followed by shortness of breath
  • Asthma attacks when you feel that the air is not able to reach your lungs due to the narrowing of the airways

Explaining Your Symptoms To Your Gp

Its a good idea to start a diary of your symptoms before speaking to your GP. Taking note of when symptoms flare-up may help you to understand your triggers. This diary will then help your GP to understand and properly assess your condition. You could also try filming your symptoms if they are hard to describe.

There are several different tests for asthma – so your GP wont be able to diagnose you straightaway. Our advice on diagnosing asthma explains this process in more detail.

I’m Not Ready To Stop My Medications

Everyone thought I was insane, but I’ve kept up with the running. Since my first half-marathon, I’ve run three 10Ks and a 4-mile race. I have another 4-mile race coming up as I train for my next half-marathon in August.

Running is definitely helping to control my asthma, although the medicines play a huge role as well. My lung strength and function is improving, but my doctor is not at all inclined to take me off any medications. However, I rarely have asthma attacks now.

What To Watch Out For

HOW TO GET RID OF A COUGH!

In heart failure, the heart contracts less forcefully than it should. This can allow fluid to back up in the lungs, creating a condition called pulmonary edema. The body coughs persistently in an effort to eliminate the excess fluid.

In these patients, cough is usually accompanied by shortness of breath and may be accompanied by worse functional capacity and exercise intolerance. Sometimes, patients are unable to lie down without becoming short of breath.

Once heart failure has been diagnosed and appropriate treatment started, the cough should go away. If it returns, your medications may need adjusting or your angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor changed to an angiotensin receptor blocker.

What To Do If Your Cat Is Coughing

First and foremost pay attention! Even if its the first time you see it, youll need to remember a few things about the cough so you can compare it to any future coughs and so you can give your vet an accurate description of whats going on.

Here are a few things to look out for:

  • The quality of the cough is it wet or dry, does it last for ages or go away quickly?
  • The timing of the cough is it mostly during the day, or at night? These things can help point your vet in the right direction.
  • Possible triggers does the coughing happen during or after exercise? During or after eating? Keeping a journal of your cats symptoms is a good idea to help you recognise patterns.
  • Any other symptoms look out for lethargy or weight loss, sneezing, wheezing, breathing difficulties or any other symptoms that dont seem right to you.

It should go without saying, but Im going to say it anyway please do not try to treat this at home. Over the counter remedies can be great, but before you make assumptions PLEASE go to the vet, armed with as much information as you can gather.

Treatment for your coughing cat will of course depend upon the underlying problem. Your vet may prescribe antibiotics, anti-fungals, corticosteroids or anti-parasite medications to help clear the problem causing the cough.

When To See A Doctor For A Dry Cough

Childhood asthma: Breaking the myths

An occasional dry cough is rarely a cause for concern, but persistent coughing can indicate an underlying medical condition that may be more serious. A dry or sometimes tickly cough is a cough that does not bring up any phlegm or mucus. Dry coughs may cause a tickling sensation and are often due to irritation in the throat.

Asthma: Not all diagnosed with asthma will experience a dry cough. Cough-variant asthma does not produce classic symptoms, like shortness of breath or wheezing. Instead, a chronic and dry cough is the main symptom. This cough is especially likely after exposure to irritants like cold air or ambient smoke.

Asthma Management Can Help

A single individual’s asthma does not necessarily remain in the same category permanently. A person with seasonal asthma triggers may find that at a certain time of year for instance, when ragweed pollen is in the air he or she is in a higher severity group than during the rest of the year.

Asthma that starts during childhood also may become less severe as a person grows and his or her airways become wider. For any person with asthma, effective ongoing asthma control can help them move into a less severe category.

What Causes Coughing With Copd

If youve had COPD for a while, you probably know how much you usually cough.

If you find yourself coughing more than usual, or coughing up sputum that looks different than it normally does, it may be time to go to the doctor to make sure youre not having a flare-up or an exacerbation.

An increase in coughing can have several causes. Your body may be producing more sputum or mucus. Exposure to irritants, especially cigarette smoke or harsh fumes, can also increase coughing.

You may also be coughing more because youve developed a comorbidity, which means another illness exists alongside your COPD.

Examples of comorbidities include infections such as pneumonia or influenza, or issues such as gastroesophageal reflux disease .

When you lie down, GERD can push stomach acid into your throat and mouth and cause you to cough.

If your increased coughing is due to a comorbidity, you can use antibiotics or medications to return to your regular level of coughing.

Dont make any assumptions, though speak to your doctor, wholl make a diagnosis and prescribe you the right medication.

If you smoke, the most important step is to stop smoking. Quitting will put an end to smokers cough, the dry, hacking cough common among people who smoke tobacco.

A deep, productive cough that clears the airways of mucus may replace this dry cough.

What Is The Difference Between Cough

The main difference, as previously stated, is that cough-variant asthma is characterised by a dry cough that does not bring up mucus, and that is not accompanied by wheezing or other symptoms.

Another difference between the two is that cough-variant asthma may be harder to diagnose than regular asthma. This is because of the absence of other symptoms, and because there are many conditions that can cause a dry cough.

If you are suffering from a persistent dry cough that has lasted for more than 3 weeks, you should seek medical advice.

Causes of a persistent cough other than asthma include:

  • Chronic bronchitis

How Is An Asthma Cough Diagnosed

It is quite difficult to understand when you need to seek medical opinion for your asthma cough. In most cases, because the only symptom is a chronic cough, people tend to ignore the problem and continue on with their lives. However, if your cough has lasted for more than 8 weeks and you cannot clearly identify any reason behind it, then you should consult your doctor.

Your doctor will begin by prescribing breathing tests that measure your lung capacity and lung function. You will probably be made to have these tests from time to time so that your doctor can understand the effectiveness of your medications. In some cases, allergy testing is also prescribed, particularly if the doctor suspects an allergen trigger behind your asthma cough.

Some doctors may also suggest a methacholine challenge test. In this test, when you inhale methacholine, it triggers a bout of coughing and bronchial spasms. While this trigger is observed in everyone, a person suffering from asthma will have an increased sensitivity to the test.

Why Can’t I Catch My Breath After A Coughing Fit

A coughing fit may make it more difficult to catch your breath if it occurs along with a narrowing of the airways that allow you to inhale. Asthma and emphysema may cause an inability to catch one’s breath following a series of coughing fits. Steam or an inhaler may be treatments for a coughing fit.

He sneezes regularly, sometimes having what I call sneeze attacks, where he sneezes repeatedly over and over and spraying mucous out of his nose. The mucous is sometimes orange, sometimes clear. My cat has been given Lysine chews, which he ate for a while and now wont touch. He has had antibiotics, which did nothing.
