Can You Use Voltarol If You Have Asthma

What Are Topical Nsaids

Can I Still Be Insured if I Have Asthma?

A topical medication is one thats applied directly to the skin. In the case of arthritis, it goes on the skin over the painful joint. The drug penetrates the skin, enters the joint and reduces the pain signals in the joint.

The level of drug entering the bloodstream is much lower than when the NSAID is taken by mouth. For example, topical NSAIDs reduce the systemic exposure by almost 90 percent. This minimizes the risk of harmful side effects.

The topical NSAIDs available in the United States contain the drug diclofenac, and they require a prescription. Diclofenac is available in three topical formulations: gel, liquid and patch.

  • Diclofenac gel can be used to treat pain from osteoarthritis in the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles and feet. It may be applied four times daily.
  • The liquid formulation , which can be used for osteoarthritis of the knee, is applied twice daily.
  • The patch is placed over the most painful joint. It should be changed every 12 hours.
  • A review of several clinical studies, found that Voltaren gel is particularly effective. In this review, 60 percent of patients got 50 percent relief with topical NSAIDs, says Dr. Konya. This was similar to the pain relief from oral NSAIDs and better than the placebo.

Topical NSAIDs are usually very well-tolerated. However, approximately 1 in 20 people experience a mild, temporary skin reaction, such as rash, redness, dryness or itchiness.

How Should I Use Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel

Use Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as instructed on the packaging. Do not use this medicine in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Use the lowest dose that is effective in treating your condition.

Read all patient information, medication guides, and instruction sheets provided to you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Wash your hands after applying Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel, unless you are treating the skin on your hands. Wait at least 10 minutes before dressing or wearing gloves. Wait at least 1 hour before you bathe or shower.

Do not apply to an open skin wound, or on areas of infection, rash, burn, or peeling skin. Do not cover treated skin with a bandage or expose it to heat from a hot tub, heating pad, or sauna. Heat or bandaging can increase the amount of diclofenac you absorb through your skin.

To treat osteoarthritis pain with Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel: This medicine is supplied with dosing cards that show you how much gel to use for a 2-gram dose or a 4-gram dose. Squeeze the gel onto this card along the line for your dose. Use no more gel than will fit on the length of your dosing line. Wipe the card directly onto the treatment area and rub gently into the skin.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

    Other Options For Pain Relief

Of course, painkillers aren’t the only answer for many of life’s aches and pains. Many effective and safe alternatives don’t have any side effects at all.

    • Ice packs, for acute injuries like a sprained ankle, can keep down swelling and ease pain.
    • Heat — with a hot towel or heating pad — can be helpful for treating chronic overuse injuries.
    • Physical activity can help reduce some kinds of discomfort, such as arthritis pain.
    • Relaxation — with techniques like yoga or meditation — may reduce pain. Biofeedback may help as well. These approaches are best for pain that’s made worse by stress, like tension headaches.
    • Nontraditional techniques with low risks — like acupuncture — benefit some people.

So remember: Pain relief doesn’t only come from a pill bottle.

What Are The Risks For People With Asthma

Can you use an expired inhaler? Safety and effects

If you have asthma, painkillers called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be risky. They include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen, the active ingredients in medicines like Bufferin, Advil, and Aleve.

Other pain relievers are potentially less dangerous. Acetaminophen — the active ingredient in Tylenol — works differently. It poses a much lower risk of problems for people with asthma, although like any drug, it does have side effects of its own. You shouldn’t take any over-the-counter painkiller for more than 10 days without your health care provider’s approval.

Why are people with asthma at special risk from NSAIDs? Experts aren’t sure of the exact cause, but it seems that these medicines can trigger a dangerous immune response leading to constriction of the airways. People who are older and who have more severe asthma may be more sensitive to these drugs.

Symptoms include a cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, and wheezing. In some people, these medicines can also cause swelling of the face or hives. If you have any reaction, get help right away.

“One problem is that people may not realize the connection between asthma and a painkiller,” Korenblat tells WebMD. “It can take up to two hours for the medicine to cause the effect, so you may not see the link.”

What Other Information Should I Know

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

    How Does Voltarol Gel Work

    What is Asthma? (HealthSketch)

Voltarol gels contain the active ingredient diclofenac diethylammonium, which is a type of medicine called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug . Diclofenac works by stopping an enzyme in the body called cyclo-oxygenase from working.

If you have an injury, or a condition like arthritis, the COX in your body normally makes substances called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Diclofenac stops COX from making these prostaglandins and this reduces the inflammation and pain.

When you apply diclofenac gel to the skin it is absorbed into the underlying tissues, where it reduces pain and inflammation in the local area.
