Can You Smoke With Asthma

What Is The Link Between Smoking And Asthma

How does smoking affect asthma?

Smoke from cigars, cigarettes and pipes harms your body in many ways, but it is especially harmful to the respiratory system. The airways in a person with asthma are very sensitive and can react to many things, or “triggers.” Coming into contact with these triggers often produces asthma symptoms. Tobacco smoke is a powerful asthma trigger.

Prevalence Of Cigarette Smoking

The World Health Organization has estimated that there are 1.25 billion smokers worldwide, with approximately two-thirds living in developing countries. In many developed countries, at least one in four adults smoke cigarettes. The prevalence of smoking in USA and UK males is 26 and 27%, respectively, and, 21 and 25%, respectively, in females , . The total percentage of smokers varies between European countries, e.g. 38% in Germany, 30% in France, 29% in Italy and 18% in Sweden. Prevalence rates of smoking are higher in those countries with lower incomes and among young adults, particularly females . Smoking rates are, in general, much higher in underdeveloped countries. Former smokers accounted for 27% of the male and 21% of the female population in the UK .

There is much less information on smoking rates in adult asthmatic patients, but active cigarette smoking is common, with prevalence rates similar to the general population. Current smoking rates among asthmatic patients from the USA and UK range from 1735% . In the USA, particularly high rates were found in adults presenting to hospital emergency departments with acute asthma . An additional number of adult asthmatics are former smokers, with prevalence rates ranging from 2243% , . Thus, in most developed countries, at least one-half of the adult asthmatic population are likely to be current or former cigarette smokers.

Forms Of Marijuana For Use

When you think of smoking weed and asthma, it might seem a bit counterintuitive. After all, the most popular way to use cannabis for recreation is smoking. Smoking anything with asthma is probably not the best idea.

But its important to remember that smoking is only one way to use weed. There are also several other forms of marijuana. Keep in mind; each form may have a different concentration of THC and CBD, onset, and duration of effects.

There is not a best form of marijuana to use. It comes down to personal preference. Certain forms, such as patches tend to provide an exact dosage more accurately than vaping or smoking weed.

Can Cbd Oil Also Help Asthma Patients

CBD is known as the non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is often used for medicinal purposes. Even though its not FDA-approved, CBD oil is commonly used for the management of different conditions.

CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which can have a beneficial effect as an asthma treatment. It can help the muscles around the respiratory system to relax and allow for better airflow. In fact, many people use CBD oil to self-medicate and find relief from their symptoms.

    Secondhand Smoke And Children

Children who are around others who smoke are much more likely to:

    • Need emergency room care more often
    • Miss school more often
    • Have asthma that is harder to control

    Choose Vaporizing Over Smoking

Cannabis has the potential to alleviate symptomsexperienced by asthma patients regardless of the method of consumption. However, this does not mean all of these methods are equal in efficiency. Italso does not mean that using any of the least asthma-friendly ones is entirelyharmless. Key elements to consider are:

    • Optimal safety
    • Potential for instant relief
    • Controllable dosage andefficiency

Smoking cannabis is not recommended, as depending on the severity of your condition, it may escalate an existing asthma-related crisis, or even trigger one. Edibles, on the other hand, because of certain variables such as the time they may take to release their effects, can be used as a long-term treatment, but would not be reliable enough in the case of an attack. This is why for emergency treatments, vaporizing is definitely the best option for cannabis and asthma. Not only is the release of cannabinoids in the body;close to optimal, the risks for the lungs are at an absolute minimum.

Of course, smoking cannabis is not harmful to theaverage, healthy human body. But, as an asthma sufferer, you need to watch outfor anything that can irritate or negatively impact your respiratory system.

    Why Do People Get Asthma

Research has yet to show a definitive cause of asthma. However, researchers have determined several risk factors that can lead to asthma development.

    Family History and Genetics

Children of mothers with asthma are three times more likely to suffer from asthma, and 2.5 times more likely if the father has asthma. More than 30 genes have been linked to asthma so far, and gene-gene interactions, gene-environment interactions and epigenetic modifications also play a part. Genetic differences also play a role in differences in response to treatment.

    Allergies

People are more likely to have asthma if they have certain types of allergies, such ones which can affect the eyes and nose. However, not everyone who has allergies will get asthma and not everyone who has asthma is affected by allergies. Respiratory allergies and some types of asthma are related to an antibody called immunoglobulin E , which the immune system produces in response to allergens. To protect the body, the IgE causes allergic reactions that can affect the eyes, nose, throat, lungs and skin.

    Premature Birth

Children born before 37 weeks are at increased risk of developing asthma later in life.

    Lung Infections

Babies or small children may be at risk of developing asthma later in life if they had certain lung infections at a very early age.

    Occupational Exposures

Women can develop adult-onset asthma during or after menopause.
