Can Marijuana Help Asthma

THC can suppress the immune system. Asthma is an allergic reaction that your lungs have, the immune system overreacts to something in the environment, and that is the reason for the asthma attack. In this instance, THC can aid in calming the immune system since it is an anti-inflammatory.

But the main method of consuming marijuana is smoking it. And for those with asthma that choose to smoke despite their condition, there are likely to be more complications. So, if cannabis can help with calming the immune system, but smoking it causes complications, how can one with asthma benefit from marijuana?

Optimise Your Vaporizing Experience

Once you have found the vaporizer of your dreams, and you have mastered the vaporizing rhythm that suits you best, very little remains in your way. Yet, even the smallest things can become obstacles!

Avoid the most basic consequences vaporizing can have on your respiratory system by always having the necessary elements to counter them:

  • Itchy/dry throat: always have a big bottle of water nearby and take sips regularly .
  • Go easy on your lungs: start vaporizing at a lower temperature such as 180°C . Work your way up if needed, but do not exceed 220°C . A flow of air that is too warm is not recommended for your lungs.
  • Inhalation of plant matter: ensure your vaporizers accessories include mesh filters to prevent bits from travelling to your lungs, especially if you suffer from hay fever, a common sister disease of asthma.
  • Regarding hay fever: do not rub your eyes after you have handled cannabis flowers
  • Keep your vaping equipment as clean as possible using alcohol and lint-free cloths

Asthma Sufferers: Does Your Doctor Know You Smoke Weed

August 31, 2021 by Canadian Evergreen Staff

Thousands are expected to attend the 4-20 marijuana smoke-in at Vancouvers Sunset Beach Friday, and while the legalization goal of the annual Weed Day will soon be met, an event organizer says there is much more to protest. A woman smokes a joint during the annual 4-20 cannabis culture celebration at Sunset Beach in Vancouver, B.C., on Thursday, April 20, 2017.

People with asthma may wonder if smoking cannabis is hard on their health, and few studies have been done to shed much light.

The latest look-see into pots effect on asthma sufferers has coughed at least one thematic concern: patients may not be getting as much information from their doctors as theyd like.

The survey of members of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology posed questions about patterns of cannabis use knowledge and attitudes about cannabis and whether cannabis use affects their asthma.

A major takeaway is there seems to be a dearth of discussion when it comes to physicians advising their asthma patients about using pot to try to quell their symptoms. This is a problem, according to the studys lead author, Joanna S. Zeiger, MS, PhD, of the Canna Research Foundation.

Education regarding cannabis use, both its positive and adverse effects, should be discussed with patients, as well finding the safest route of administration, she wrote.

Asthma And Smoking Cannabis

Smoking marijuana to treat the symptoms of asthma may sound counterintuitive at best, outrageous at worst, and for good reason.

For one, smoke, in general, is known as a major irritant on the throat and lungs because of its composition. Tobacco smoke is often linked to different lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis. Therefore, its natural to think of marijuana smoke as another irritant of the respiratory system.

If youre a marijuana smoker and you suffer from asthma, you may have experienced exacerbation of the symptoms, which could lead to an asthma attack. In this case, you should definitely stop smoking marijuana.

However, this reaction isnt necessarily because the smoke came from weed, but because any type of smoke is full of irritants and allergens. Plus, when you smoke cannabis, the smoke is usually held longer in the lungs, which can lead to further irritation and inflammation.

That said, weed may actually have some potential benefits for asthma sufferers that dont include smoking cannabis. Cannabis is known for its analgesic properties, which can help with chest pain related to asthma. Additionally, one preclinical study has suggested that cannabis can improve bronchoconstriction and improve airflow, while another has looked into the bronchodilatory activity of different doses of cannabinoids.

Why even bother caring about the occurrence of mold in the weed? In the end, isnt that mold is an origin of medicine or treatment just like cannabis? Well, mildew and molds are fungi that prosper in moist environments with an insufficient circulation of air. With weed, the occurrence of mildews or molds signifies that the plants are unhealthy, not medicated.

Although some molds release antibiotics such as penicillin, medicating an infection through smoking moldy weed can be considered a bad idea. People with an allergy to penicillin may respond fiercely to smoking mold. Other people like those who are suffering from compromised immune systems may not be able to combat the spores of mildews, resulting in moldy lungs because of breathing in shitty weed.

Smoking moldy weed will probably not cause you death. However, it is still not advised to consume a moldy weed.

Among healthy individuals, smoking moldy weed is not likely to create a damaging effect on the health discounting the overall hazards of smoking. If you happen to smoke moldy weed, you may feel different symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and coughing, which are more obnoxious than treacherous.

However, if you develop an allergy to mold, you may result in the inflammation of your lungs or sinuses and manifestations that may include the following:

  • Wheezing
  • Congestion
  • Drainage

How Dangerous Is Smoking With Asthma?

Consumers that use cannabis for recreational purposesoften only have one objective in mind when they start vaporizing: to inhalesome vapour. And surely enough, this sole objective leads most people toacquire, over time, a satisfactory method of vaporizing.

When vaporizing for medical reasons, it is necessaryto inhale sufficient vapour without causing more irritation to the airways. Forinstance, a violent coughing fit can make an attack go from distressing tolife-threatening in a short amount of time.

It Does Not Make It Easier To Breathe

Contrary to the myth, smoking or vaping pot does not relax the airways. Thats what a 2018 study, published in Annals of the American Thoracic Society, found.

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseasean illness that is different from asthma but also reduces lung functionshowed no improvement in breathlessness after inhaling marijuana.

Cannabis Delivery System: Can An Asthmatic Smoke It

One of the most common ways to get THC into the body quickly and effectively is to smoke. And when smoke enters the lungs, it causes airway irritation and can lead to chronic bronchitis if done in excess. There are also potential long-term risks associated with smoking if you have asthma:

  • Large fluid-filled sacs can easily develop in your lungs if you smoke marijuana, making your asthma issues even more complicated.
  • The bullae can develop into pneumothorax, aka collapsed lung, a life-threatening condition.

Short-term risks can easily aggravate your asthmatic symptoms and make your experience a lot more miserable.

These include:

  • Worsened coughing
  • Lung infections

So smoking cannabis to ease asthma symptoms, or for any other reason, isnt really an option for an asthmatic. But dont stress! There are two other options available to you that are as effective and speedy as smoking:

  • Vaping
  • Inhalers

Similarly, after the exercise-induced bronchospasm, the placebo cannabis led to a gradual return of the airways, but took about 30-60 minutes. On the contrary, the cannabis applied an immediate reversal of the exercise-induced asthma and resulting hyperinflation.

Dr. Tashkin was among the first to make the connection between reducing asthmatic symptoms and consuming cannabis and since then other researchers have followed suit and proved this connection.

A study from the European Journal of Pharmacology, published in 2012 outlined that CBD was highly effective in decreasing inflammation in acute lung injuries. Scientists in this study applied CBD to inflammatory cells and concluded that the compound has potent immunosuppressive properties.

Another study from 2015, found in the Mediators of Inflammation journal noted that CBD, not only , but can aid in the reduction of the hypersecretion of mucus.

In case it wasnt clear, smoking weed will not induce an asthma attack. If anything, science proves it might actually help it.

Mental Effects Of Copd

Can You Smoke Weed While Breastfeeding?

As with any chronic disease, having COPD can leave you feeling hopeless and depressed. Sleepiness, fatigue and other COPD symptoms are related to depression, and eating problems, the need for supplemental oxygen and other effects of the disorder can also make you experience the blues.

Also, youre more susceptible to anxiety when you have COPD. Having a hard time breathing and not being able to catch your breath can be incredibly anxiety-provoking. Therefore, as a COPD patient, you may always worry about having a bout with shortness of breath.

If your breathing becomes an issue due to the air quality you breathe or a similar problem, your brain may set off an internal suffocation alarm that causes a wave of fearsome distress and panic.

Panic causes:

  • A feeling of being on edge
  • Lightheadedness

This kind of mindset may trigger overwhelming feelings, and youll experience more anxiety from these overactive false alarms.

Final Thoughts On The Discussion Of Marijuana Treatment For Asthma

Some have argued in the past that marijuana is an effective treatment for asthma because it has anti-inflammatory properties and could help open the bronchial tubes. While there is evidence out there to support both of these notions, much more research is required in order to make the claim that marijuana can treat asthma or improve an asthmatic condition.

Much more research is required in order to make the claim that marijuana can treat asthma or improve an asthmatic condition.

And of course, we certainly dont recommend smoking in any form if you have asthma. And while vaporizing cannabis may result in less coughing, there is still virtually no data on its long-term respiratory health effects.

All things considered, edibles and oils are arguably the best way to consume cannabis if you have asthma. They make take a little longer to work, but theyre almost certainly not as harmful to the lungs as smoke inhalation.

Dont Use Cannabis Dabs

Does Cannabis Help with Asthma?

Dabs are becoming increasingly popular. Medicinal cannabis dabs are also gaining ground, but in the context of asthma, they simply dont fit the bill. Dabbing does not equate vaporizing, as it can potentially expose your lungs to an overwhelming experience. Besides, the potency of most dabs can be a hazard, especially if you are already in a state of major stress and/or anxiety.

Potential Benefits Of Marijuana For Asthma

A growing body of research is focusing on marijuanas effects on asthma and whether cannabis plants can offer some relief for the condition. The focus isnt so much on smoking marijuana joints, but rather on taking cannabinoids instead.

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring substances in marijuana plants. They are sometimes used to treat chronic pain and neurological conditions, such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis. This is due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Since asthma is caused by a chronic inflammation of the lungs, researchers are trying to find out whether cannabinoids can have similar effects for this condition. Research is especially promising for people who have allergic asthma.

Cannabinoids may be available in the form of supplements. These substances may also be derived from smoking marijuana in nontraditional forms. A 2013 study in the journal Substance Abuse found that people who smoke marijuana using vaporizers gained more benefits from the plant with less lung-irritating smoke.

Still, there are some limits to these potential benefits. One study published in Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine contends that short-term medicinal uses of marijuana may not harm the lungs. This is compared to recreational or heavy smoking. However, its not clear just how much is safe or for exactly how long.

Other Risks Of Cannabis

Other risks of regularly using cannabis can include:

  • feeling wheezy or out of breath
  • developing an uncomfortable or painful cough
  • making symptoms of asthma worse in people with asthma
  • reduced ability to drive or operate machinery safely

If you drive while under the influence of cannabis, you’re more likely to be involved in an accident. This is one reason why drug driving, like drink driving, is illegal.
