What Is Braunability’s Save My Spot Program
Save My Spot is concerned with protecting the striped spaces located next to some handicap parking spaces usually marked with a “van parking” sign. If you have an invisible disability, you likely are not in need of these accessible vehicle parking spaces because you may not be using a mobility aid like a wheelchair or scooter. These striped spaces were specially created to allow people with these aids to safely enter and exit their side-entry vehicles away from the traffic of the parking lot. The back passenger door opens and a ramp extends into the striped space. Without these spaces, wheelchair and scooter users are left stranded. So while Save My Spot isn’t specifically just for accessible parking, you can certainly use Save My Spot to help educate your communities about the importance of respecting handicap parking spaces.
Limited Or No Use Of Arms
Handicap placards can be issued to people who have limited or no use of one or both of their arms. If you have a deformity or have had an arm amputated, youll be able to get a disabled parking permit. There are also conditions that can limit the use of your arms, such as spasms or joint disorders. Some states even permit hand disabilities to be qualifying conditions. Additionally, if youre missing a limb, some states allow you to skip the full medical certification process. With a disability like this, you can just show up at the DMV and apply for a handicap placard right there without a signature from a physician.
Why It’s So Exhausting To Have Invisible Illnesses
I have a disability sticker but I dont look ill. This causes confusion for many onlookers. They think I have nothing wrong with me. I get judged. But I;do have a chronic illness entitling me to a disability sticker its just that there are few visible signs.
I have severe, chronic asthma. I have Hashimotos disease and I have type 2 diabetes. I also have;depression. You cant see any of these illnesses. Each one of of them happens on the inside.
A young man said to me today, as we were both having IV treatments, Gee, you look so well. Well, I was totally exhausted! But this exhaustion doesnt show on the outside either.
All these diseases/illnesses I have are chronic. All of then can cause me physical and emotional symptoms. But rarely can anyone else see these effects.
Being chronically ill with invisible signs can add to the stress that illness brings with it.;Its as if you arent believed. Theres;an attitude of if its invisible, then it isnt real. No one can see when my diabetes causes my vision to be blurry and my hands and legs to shake; you dont see the exhaustion that the diabetes, Hashimotos and asthma cause. You dont see my internal struggle with depression and negative self-talk.
You might see that I am struggling to walk and see my shortness of breath. But you dont see the underlying reasons. The reasons for my struggles are these invisible chronic illnesses.

You Suffer From Limited Vision
If you have some limited vision issues, you could be eligible for a placard. The requirements differ from state to state some specify that you need to have a visual acuity of 20/200 or less with correcting lenses. If youre unable to drive because of your vision problems, you could still qualify for a placard. As long as youre in the car when you use the permit, the driver youre with can use the placard, since youre the one needing assistance.
In addition to vision issues, you may qualify for a disabled parking permit if you are hearing impaired or need to use a hearing aid. Check with your local DMV for these specific restrictions.

Parking Badge Policies In Canada
In Canada, parking badge policies and programs for persons with disabilities come under provincial and territorial government authority. These governments then delegate the responsibility for enacting and enforcing their own bylaws on parking permits and the use of designated parking spaces for persons with disabilities, to cities and municipalities. As a result, parking badge policies for persons with disabilities may vary from one jurisdiction to another. There are, however, important common elements:
- All jurisdictions provide designated parking spaces for vehicles carrying persons with mobility disabilities.
- These designated parking spaces are marked by a traffic control sign bearing the international wheelchair logo. The international logo is often painted on the pavement of the parking space, as well.
- A parking permit is issued to a person with a disability, not a specific vehicle, and is for that persons use only.
- The driver must hang the parking permit from the rearview mirror or place it in plain view on the dashboard, when it is parked.
- The person with the disability must leave and board the vehicle while it is parked in the designated parking space.
Unlike most European countries, in Canada:

Some Of The Rules Around Benefits
- If you have severe asthma you are entitled to benefits depending on how it affects your daily life and ability to work. This means that you may have to be assessed by a health professional as part of applying for a benefit.
- Benefits can be means-tested or non-means tested, if the benefit is means-tested it will take into account what other money you have such as income and/or savings.
- Benefits can be contributory or non-contributory. You need to have paid a certain amount of national insurance to get a contributory benefit.
- There is a limit to the total amount of benefit that most people aged 16 to 64 can get. This is called the benefits cap. But youre not affected by the benefit cap if anyone in your household gets certain benefits such as Attendance Allowance , Personal Independence Payment or Working Tax Credit.
Submit Your Permit Application
Usually, the disabled person must apply for the handicap permit themselves, either online, through the mail or in person, though some states allow someone else to apply on their behalf.;
It can take about a month to process a permit application and receive relevant handicap stickers, placards or plates. Plan accordingly, especially if you know ahead of time that you might need a temporary tag for a scheduled surgery. Keep in mind that if youre not a disabled veteran, some states charge a small fee for handicap permits. Some states will allow you to get two placards, while others limit you to just one.;

Why Are Striped Parking Spaces Important
When you get a BraunAbility accessible vehicle, you buy your freedom to go anywhere you want at your convenience and on your schedule. Being able to drive to the store for a forgotten recipe item is no longer out of reach. You can park and independently go to the store on your own! But when someone parks in the striped spaces next to handicap parking spaces meant for transfering and deploying a ramp, not only can you not extend your ramp to re-enter the vehicle, you are stuck waiting for the offender to return and move their vehicle.
We won’t stand for it! BraunAbility vehicles bring independence to tens of thousands of people every year, and every year their independence is taken away over and over again by people who don’t understand the basics of parking near a handicap van.
