Eating More Fish Can Do More Than Just Help Prevent Asthma

A Wife Goes Missing In Memphis | The FBI Files

The study included data from more than 4,500 British children. Those in the top quarter for fish consumption had a 51% lower risk than peers in the bottom. Also, the gene variant FADS was carried by over half. This common mutation increases omega-3 fatty acid metabolism in the blood.

The most common fatty acids known as EPA and DHA work to reduce inflammation. The study used food frequency questionnaires to estimate the intake of EPA and DHA from fish in children from 7 years old. This was compared to the rate of new cases of doctor-diagnosed asthma in those children at 11 to 14.

Although we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings, it would nevertheless be sensible for children to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake, says Shaheen.

Study results were confirmed in an independent cohort of people born in Sweden. Other studies have found that regular consumption of oily fish lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes, thereby triggering blood fats by more than a quarter.

Professor Shaheens team, which included colleagues at the universities of Bristol and Southampton and the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, now plan to see if eating fish can stave off asthma attacks.

The results were published in the European Respiratory Journal.

Not Your Average Fbi Agent

As he drives through South Los Angeles on an overcast afternoon, Special Agent John Pi of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is having trouble–as usual–making up his mind.

Pi, who in sunglasses looks far younger than 36, has an organized-crime case to work. But the call over a bureau radio is clear: The SWAT team is about to enter a house where it believes kidnappers are keeping a 3-year-old taken from a San Marino family two weeks earlier. The address is only five minutes away.

Pi, after wavering, heads over. As he drives up, two agents in full SWAT gear run toward him, waving. The child is alive, but needs medical attention.

Doc! they yell at Pi. We need you now!

Pis skills have always been in demand. He studied engineering and computer science at Columbia, where the New York Police Department recruited him. Instead he wrote code for IBM, which wanted to promote him, before he quit to attend medical school. He completed his residency at UCLA and earned a sought-after job at a Cleveland emergency room, where other doctors saw him as a future chief. Only a year later, he jetted off to enroll at the FBI Academy in Virginia.

John Pi is kind of a phenomenon in the bureau, said supervisory Special Agent Doug Kane, who commands the SWAT team in Los Angeles. I dont think youll find anyone with the background he has.

Lopez had always been an athlete and a leader. According to an interview with People magazine, she never let her hearing loss get in the way of what she wanted to do as an athlete. In college, she played the position of setter on her volleyball teama position that required her to communicate often and clearly, something her hearing loss could have made more difficult.

But Lopez adjusted. Just as she adjusted when she joined the military and served in Afghanistan. Thats not to say there were no setbacks. Lopez had always planned to enlist in the armed services and then join the FBI, but she was turned down when she tried to enlist the first timeon account of her hearing.

How Unhealthy Are Oakland Homes

Soni Johnson has worked for the Alameda County Healthy Homes Department for more than 20 years. When inspecting a home in Oakland, she can expect to see a few things: The home or apartment is often older and crowded, sometimes with multiple families living together under one roof, and the conditions are substandard, with mold, pest infestations, and peeling paint.

Johnson and her co-workers at the agency might be referred to a clients home because a child has tested positive for lead during a blood lead level screening, which is required for all families on Medicaid or other forms of public insurance.

Between 2016 and 2017, Healthy Homes and Asthma Start partnered on a study called Pay for Success, which is assessing whether pairing health coaching from Asthma Start and a home inspection from Healthy Homes can deliver better health outcomes for asthmatic children and reduce costs for the insurer, Alameda Alliance for Health. The families that participated in this study were all enrolled in the county health plan, and their children visited the hospital for asthma care in the 12 months prior to the study start date.

It was also looking at whether you could take two county entities and partner them together and get a better result, said Rueda-Yamashita, director of Asthma Start.

Larry Brooks, director of Alameda County Healthy Homes, said if it works the program may be adopted statewide or even nationwide.

What About If Youre Currently Serving

According to Recruiter Mendoza, if its discovered that you have Asthma while youre serving, youll be discharged.

With that said, we had someone contact us and said that this is not necessarily true.

Check out what he had to say below:

I would like to speak on the Navy discharging you for being diagnosed with asthma while currently serving: this just simply isnt true.

I have been enlisted for 10 years, and am looking to 20+ years of enlistment at this point.

I was officially diagnosed earlier this year with asthma, and no talk of discharge was ever brought up, except when I stated that I do not want this diagnosis to be one that would cause me to be discharged from service.

I am being treated with a single daily pill, and an inhaler to use before physical exercise and also on an as-needed basis.

I will not be discharged for being diagnosed with asthma.

Navys Policy On Asthma In 2019

OMK spoke with Officer Mendoza, a Navy recruiter stationed in Atlanta, Georgia, about the Navys policy on Asthma.

Heres what he had to say:

Its definitely possible to get in the Navy if you were previously diagnosed, but it can be very difficult. For starters, if you currently have asthma, its not going to work out.

The military has a very strict policy on this if you are currently being treated for asthma, then you will not be able to serve.

In addition, any history of Asthma after the age of 13 will require a waiver.

The waiver process will happen at your Military Entrance Processing Station, or MEPS.

Before enlisting, youll be required to perform whats known as a pulmonary function test, or PFT.

A PFT is essentially a noninvasive test that shows how well your lungs work.

If you can pass this test, you can join the Navy.
