What Is An Asthma Attack

Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the lungs. During an asthma attack, the airways become narrower than normal and can cause difficulty breathing.

The severity of an asthma attack can range from mild to very serious. Some asthma attacks may require prompt medical attention.

The preferred way of treating an asthma attack is to use a rescue inhaler, which contains medication that expands your airways.

But what if youre having an asthma attack and dont have your rescue inhaler available? There are several things that you can do while you wait for your symptoms to subside or for medical attention. Read on to learn more.

When Should I Go To The Emergency Room

You should visit the ER if you have a severe attack that doesnt get better with a rescue inhaler or nebulizer treatment. In the event of a serious asthma attack, you wont be able to talk normally. You might not be able to walk normally, either. In some cases, youll notice your fingernails or lips are turning blue. All of these are signs of a life-threatening situation that needs immediate emergency care.

Symptoms After An Asthma Attack

How you feel after an asthma attack will depend on how severe the attack was and what triggered it.

If the attack was triggered by an irritant, such as cold weather, pollutants or allergens such as pollen, animal fur or dust, you should recover relatively quickly.

If your asthma attack was caused by an infection, such an upper airway infection, then it might take longer for you to recover. You may have symptoms such as fatigue and exhaustion after your asthma attack.

Do follow any recovery guidance given to you by a doctor or medical professional. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, take your medication and attend any necessary follow-up appointments.

If you havent seen your doctor or asthma nurse for a routine appointment recently, book one as soon as possible.

What Benefits Does Urgent Care Offer

Of all the different medical specialties, urgent care medicine overlaps the most with family practice and emergency medicine, though it possesses enough uniqueness that its really a separate specialty with a distinct knowledge base, skill set, and a wide breadth of experience.

Urgent care medicines broad scope allows physicians to care for both male and female patients of all ages and with almost any complaint. Unlike family practice, though, its primary focus is on acute medical problems.

Urgent care offers several benefits over emergency or even primary care. First, is that it usually costs less to see an urgent care physician than to see a physician in the emergency department. This is especially important for lower-income patients or those with no insurance.

Second, urgent care offers walk-in visits that include after-hours, such as weekends and evenings, when primary care physician offices are generally closed.

And third, you generally spend less time waiting to be seen and treated in urgent care than in an emergency department.

Omni-Med Family Care & Urgent Care offers the best features of both urgent care and primary care. If youre a patient at our practice and need urgent care, Dr. DiRuggiero already has your medical and family history on file, which allows him to more rapidly diagnose and treat your injury or illness.

What Caused My Severe Asthma Exacerbation

Based mainly on the fever developing , they determined the source of my problems was a lung infection. Along with my instructions to keep doing what I was doing, I left with a prescription for azithromycin for 5 days and to finish my last two days of steroids. Im 3 days into the antibiotics and, while I dont know if theyre helping or Im just starting to recover, I am beginning to feel a bit better .

Based on all of the abovebeing seen relatively quickly, having tests done to rule out other causes for my symptoms, and being kept long enough for observation and finding the problemI feel like I did the right thing by going to urgent care, and even more so when I was told to come back if I got worse or wasnt improving. I just didnt want to have gone in for nothingthe common plight of the bad asthmatic.

Of course, two days after me being in urgent care, my dad came down with a cold. So, even though Saturday I may have finally felt like sort of leaving my room, I am staying in relative isolation, because a cold is the last thing I need!
