Advice For Friends And Family
Its important that your friends and family know how to help in an emergency.
It can be useful to make copies of your personal asthma action plan and share it with others who may need to know what to do when you have an attack.
You can photocopy your existing plan, or you could download a blank personal asthma action plan from Asthma UK and fill it in for anyone who might need a copy.
Or you could take a photo of your action plan on your phone, so you can show or send it to others easily.

Talk To Your Doctor About Asthma And Sleep Apnea
Response from Theresa Cannizzarro, Respiratory Therapist:
There is a ton of evidence that sleep apnea can aggravate asthma symptoms. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway closes during sleep which causes the reduction of airflow and oxygen to the lungs. You may snore, cough, or wake up gasping for air numerous times per night.
You may not realize you are waking up due to sleep apnea. This may lead to increased inflammation in the body, including the lungs. Narrowing of the small airways can lead to more irritation and constriction of the smooth muscle in the lungs, which makes asthma symptoms worse. If you suspect you have sleep apnea definitely talk with your doctor about it so they can order a sleep study to test to see if you, in fact, have sleep apnea.

Asthma Symptoms: 5 Signs Your Shortness Of Breath Is Serious
If you suffer from shortness of breath, youre not alone. Its a common symptom and one that prompts many people to see a doctor or seek other medical treatment. Knowing when your shortness of breath is an emergency isnt always easy. It can be the result of hyperventilation, acid reflux, or a panic attack cases when shortness of breath usually recedes on its own or more serious issues involving your respiratory health. There are many possible causes of shortness of breath, as well as signs that its time to seek medical help.
Uncontrolled Or Frequent Symptoms
Uncontrolled asthma is earmarked by daily symptoms, such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. It is associated with respiratory disturbance, sleep disturbance, and nighttime flare-ups, all of which can cause daytime tiredness.
One 2013 on children found that those who had frequent asthmatic symptoms experienced daytime fatigue more often than those with occasional or no symptoms. This finding was independent of each childs sleep quality or the amount of time spent in bed.

Causes Signs Symptoms Treatments And Controversy
With James L. Wilson, PhD
Excess stress causes the adrenal glands to increase cortisol production.
If you’re feeling tired and fried, chances are you’ve probably heard of adrenal fatigue and wondered if it may be the source of your constant exhaustion. But what exactly is it, and how do you know if it’s what’s causing your lack of oomph? Let’s investigate.
Adrenal fatigue is an increasingly common yet sometimes controversial diagnosis used to indicate depletion of the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenals for use in the regulation of blood pressure. In response to stress, the adrenals release greater amounts of cortisol. Adrenal fatigue is thought to occur when the adrenals have become overtaxed by excess cortisol release and can no longer produce levels of cortisol necessary for optimal body function.
James L. Wilson, PhD, who coined the term adrenal fatigue in his book Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Syndrome, describes the adrenals as two little glands that sit over your kidneys and are about the size of two large grapes and weigh about five-to-eight grams.
According to Wilson, The adrenals put out over fifty hormones. We often only hear about DHA and cortisol, but forty percent of womens estrogen or progesterone are made in the adrenal glands and about forty percent of testosterone in males is made in the adrenal glands.
Do Seasonal Allergies Wreak Havoc On Your Body
If so, youre not alone many people experience an increase in their allergy symptoms during allergy season, especially when pollen counts are high. For some, symptoms are mild, with sneezing and stuffiness, while others experience joint, back and neck pain, in addition to breathing difficulties.
In some cases, your symptoms may appear to be related more to the weather, injury or illness rather than specific allergens. However some allergy symptoms, such as non-allergic rhinitis and even joint pain, can be brought on by rapid changes in temperature and humidity that typically accompany the spring season. In the United States, spring often is the highest time for allergies, meaning your seasonal allergies could be the cause of your pain.
Lets take a closer look at how allergies and joint pain may be related.

How To Deal With Asthma Fatigue
There are many reasons why you may suffer from fatigue if you have asthma. The most common cause of fatigue is oxygen deprivation, however many other reasons may account for your shortness of breath.
Determining what is causing your fatigue is key to solving the problem. It is very likely that multiple factors may be involved, some of which may not be related to your asthma diagnosis, so it is important to explore all possibilities.
Causes And Triggers Of Asthma
Asthma is caused by swelling of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow.
It may happen randomly or after exposure to a trigger.
Common asthma triggers include:
- smoke, pollution and cold air
- infections like colds or flu
Identifying and avoiding your asthma triggers can help you keep your symptoms under control.

Is Fatigue A Sign Of Asthma
Response from Leon C. Lebowitz, BA, RRT:
Asthma is characterized by hypersensitivity of the airways. We tend to describe the main symptoms of asthma as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness, which may include pain or pressure.3
Waking up at night and concomitant fatigue are characteristics of poorly controlled asthma. Inadequate rest and sleep during the night subsequently impacts normal functioning during the day. Again, this may manifest itself as a feeling of being tired and/or feeling constantly exhausted.3
Persistent bouts of coughing combined with increased use of one’s accessory muscles during asthma exacerbations often results in muscle fatigue and sometimes, muscle pain. The constant wheezing that can accompany exacerbations also contributes towards a feeling of being weakened, tired, and fatigued.2
The best approach to treating the fatigue that is associated with one’s asthma is to keep it under control. Signs that asthma may be out of control include more frequent use of one’s rescue inhaler, increased shortness of breath, self-limiting physical activities because of one’s asthma condition, and any other signs that are specific for the individual.2
Surprising Signs Of Adult
This post is available in: Spanish
That persistent cough that keeps you up at night may stem from more than just a tickle in the back of your throat. It could be adult-onset asthma.
Many people experience a jolt of disbelief when they are diagnosed with asthma later in life, especially if they have never experienced symptoms before. Asthma? That condition that causes kids to wheeze?
It turns out adult-onset asthma is far more common than many people realize. Asthma is often considered a disease of children, so adults may be surprised when they are diagnosed with asthma, says pulmonologist Javier Pérez-Fernández, M.D., the critical care director at Baptist Hospital of Miami.
The number of people with asthma grows every year. Currently, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those cases, more than 20 million are among adults, with the greatest number of cases among ages 35 and 65.
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung airways that can lead to coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath or wheezing. Among adults who develop asthma later in life, the symptoms may initially be more subtle than in children, which can cause patients to overlook or ignore the condition. But its important to treat symptoms as soon as possible so they dont become severe, said Dr. Pérez-Fernández, who also serves as director of pulmonology for West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

Can Asthma Cause Snoring
Sleep apnea isnt the only thing that is often closely related to snoring. Asthma can also be responsible due to the congestion that is often associated with asthma.
As such, when you have allergy-induced asthma, it can clog up your nose and cause snoring. If you find yourself waking up with a scratchy or sore throat, talk to your doctor to get to the root cause of your snoring.
Asthma and sleep apnea both involve breathing disorders but ultimately differ from person to person. If you find yourself waking up throughout the night gasping for air, talk with your doctor to uncover if a sleep study is your next step to get on your way to a better night of sleep.

Respiratory failure is a serious condition that develops when the lungs are unable to adequately take in sufficient oxygen and/or remove enough carbon dioxide, resulting low blood oxygen levels or high blood carbon dioxide levels. In other words, respiratory failure is syndrome in which the respiratory system fails in one or both of its gas exchange functions: oxygenation and carbon dioxide elimination.
Millions of individuals are estimated to be diagnosed with respiratory failure each year in the United States.

The immune system is vital for fighting off diseases. Any microorganism that enters your body activates your immune system to fight it off. White blood cells are the cells responsible for keeping your body free from diseases. When the cells are low in number, your immune system is inadequate in fighting off microorganisms, making you susceptible to infections. Therefore, a strong immune system is important for the prevention and fighting off of diseases. A strong immune system is generally achieved by proper diet and exercise. Some foods known to boost your immune system that you should incorporate into your diet include garlic, spinach, broccoli, almonds, citrus fruits, et cetera.
In some people, the immune system may be too weak to fight off diseases. This is seen in people with chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDs. This is why people living with HIV/AIDs, for example, are susceptible to bacterial infections like tuberculosis and fungal infections like candidiasis. In addition to the immune system being inadequate to fight off diseases, it can be hyperactive.
