Is it safe to exercise with asthma?

There’s no reason to stop playing sports or working out because you have EIA. As well as keeping you fit, exercise can strengthen the breathing muscles in the chest and help your lungs work better. Doctors no longer tell people with asthma to avoid exercising and, in fact, often recommend it as part of asthma treatment.

Some sports and activities are less likely to cause problems, though. These include:

Teva’s Approvals: Airduo And Armonair

In January 2017, Teva’s AirDuo RespiClick was FDA-approved for adolescent and adult patients with asthma. In July 2019, the AirDuo Digihaler was approved.

  • AirDuo Respiclick is a combination corticosteroid and long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist. It is a breath-activated, dry powder inhaler formulations. AirDuo contains the same active ingredients as Advair Diskus.
  • AirDuo RespiClick or Digihaler are available in three different strengths and are administered as one inhalation twice daily.
  • AirDuo Digihaler, which can be used with a mobile app, contains a built-in electronic module that records data about inhaler events. It detects when the inhaler is used and measures inspiratory flow rates. AirDuo Digihaler does not need to be connected to the app in order to use the medicine.
  • The most common side effects for AirDuo includes nasopharyngitis , headache, cough, back pain, and oral candidiasis .

ArmonAir RespiClick has been discontinued by the manufacturer, but ArmonAir Digihaler was approved in February 2020 to take it’s place. This Digihaler works similar to the AirDuo product.

  • ArmonAir Digihaler contains only the corticosteroid fluticasone, the same active ingredient as Flovent.
  • ArmonAir Digihaler is also available in three strengths and it is taken as one inhalation twice daily.
  • The most common side effects for ArmonAir Digihaler includes nasopharyngitis , headache, cough, upper respiratory tract infections, back pain, and oral candidiasis .

Are We Getting Closer To A Cure

According to Dr. Grayson, there are many labs today trying to understand why asthma exists in the first place.

His research team, for example, is currently studying the role viral infections might play in the development of asthma and allergic diseases.

Once we understand the disease’s root cause and how it develops, he says, the goal is to develop studies to intervenepotentially preventing asthma from occurring altogether.

But in the meantime, experts say, asthma treatments are getting smarter.

  • Common side effects may include headache, injection site reactions, back pain, and weakness.

Even if you have asthma, you shouldnt avoid exercise altogether.

Regular physical activity is essential for managing health, improving energy, and reducing the risk of chronic disease. If you already have a chronic condition, regular exercise can help you manage it.

Aerobic Exercise Helpful For Asthma

– People with moderate to severe asthma who add aerobic exercise to their treatment regimen may have an easier time controlling common symptoms than people who rely on drugs alone, a small study suggests.

Patients randomly assigned to a three-month treadmill exercise regimen showed decreases in two aspects of the illness that make it difficult to breathe: inflammation and heightened sensitivity in the airway.

While its not surprising that asthma patients may benefit from aerobic exercise, the findings offer new evidence that physical activity can help even in patients who are already controlling symptoms with medication, said lead author Dr. Celso Carvalho, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine in Brazil.

This information strongly suggests that aerobic exercise has an anti-inflammatory effect in asthma, Carvalho said by email. The findings point to a potential benefit of exercise for enhancing the effectiveness of treatment with drugs, he said.

Globally, an estimated 235 million people suffer from asthma, according to the World Health Organization.

The incurable chronic disease leads to sudden attacks of breathlessness and wheezing. During attacks, the lining of the bronchial tubes swells, narrowing the airways and restricting the flow of air in and out of the lungs.

Exercise also appeared to curb levels of some proteins, known as cytokines, linked to inflammation.

  • Avoid exercising on a day with poor air quality or an ozone alert. Those conditions can make it more difficult to breathe.

Why Exercise Can Be A Trigger

Breathing through the nose warms up the air we breathe in. But when we exercise, particularly exercise that is more strenuous like running, we usually breathe through the mouth instead of the nose. This means were breathing in air thats colder and drier than normal.

If you have asthma, breathing in this cold, dry air causes your airways to tighten and get narrower. This can trigger your asthma symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness.

You may come across other triggers when you exercise too, like pollution or pollen if you exercise outside, or dust if you exercise indoors. Chlorine in swimming pools can also trigger symptoms for some people.

Rarely, someone not diagnosed with asthma might get asthma-like symptoms from exercising.

This is often called exercise-induced asthma, but a better term is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction because it is not caused by having asthma. However, its important to be assessed for asthma if you have symptoms of EIB.

Bronchoconstriction is when the airways get tighter and narrower as a result of strenuous exercise, particularly if someone is also breathing in cold air.

How Should I Use My Rescue Inhaler

Exercise-Induced Asthma Doesn’t Mean You Have to Be a Couch Potato

Work with your doctor and pharmacist to develop an asthma action plan, particularly for when you have an asthma attack.

  • Be sure you are using your quick-relief inhaler correctly and keep it with you at all times.
  • If you use the rescue inhaler more than two times a week, contact your prescriber your asthma may not be well-controlled and you might need to add or change a medication.

You may react differently to the same test performed on a different day or you may react positively to a substance during a test, but not react to it in everyday life.
